I should have better explained how the flame safety lamp was used. It wasn't a lack of oxygen, but an increase in flammable methane gas the lamp was used to detect. Too much methane and get everyone out and increase ventilation until methane levels dropped. It was used to help prevent explosions.In the picture of the coal mine scene there is a miner holding a safety lantern. Coming from a coal mining family, I just happen to have one of those. When the flame drops below the marks in the glass, there is not enough oxygen to breathe. On the emblem it states Permissable Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. They used these after the canery days. A few pics:

A bunch of videos have been popping up on our YouTube suggestions about this area. We'd love to go there some day.Did some off roading with my son in the Uwharre national forest in North Carolina.
