Center flat black hood vinyl decal/sticker?

Center flat black hood vinyl decal/sticker?
It really wouldn't be that difficult to mask off the center and rattle can a black center. But how long would that paint last....

If you're still considering the paint option, before I could decide what to do with mine permanently, but with still needing to take care of the surface rust and bad paint, I painted mine with a small sponge roller and Rustoleum Satin Black High Heat paint. I wound up loving it. I get lots of compliments and have decided to just keep it that way. It still looks great after 3 years in the hot Texas sun. Only thing is that it's textured surface which you may not like or want.

I initially tried to spray can it but I really didn't like the streaking it had.

In my opinion, the satin offers the perfect sheen. I has just enough of a coating so it doesn't mark up like a flat black but you don't get a glare off of it from the sun like a gloss.

Sounds very nice. Do you happen to have a picture? I am interested in the satin sheen for sure.

I can't find the close up pics so you can see the texture but these are overall. Gives some idea of the light reflection across the hood. I think the sticker would be better to keep it down but I don't have any problems with this sheen.

After I knew I was going to keep it this way, I decided to wax it with Turtle Wax last summer. Still holding a bead in the rain. Gave it a more glossy finish that I didn't like but it quickly went away.

Wow. You did the whole Jeep with a roller? Looks great. I am needing to do something paint-wise and just cant figure it out yet. Thanks for the pics.

Nicely done!
How long does it take the paint to set-up?
This looks very promising.

If I decide to just paint the center I've do as I've done on motorcycles and my dash. The hood will come off for a proper prep and a bit more control of the environment. Then using automotive, hot rod black, then spray with one a Preval Spray Gun Kit. They have a baby food like bottle at the bottom so you can use any paint you want. The units I've used produce a very fin spray that is easy to control. So far they have worked great on several motorcycle and guitar projects.

Thanks LG. I let the paint dry 24hrs before applying another coat or using the vehicle. It was suppose to be temporary so I didn't use a primer. It was a mix between bare metal, where I removed surface rust, and the older flaky paint which was sanded. I put on 3 coats. The rustoleum I used is very runny and has to go on thin. I wanted a more textured look, so for each coat, I put on a very quick thin layer about the size of a quarter panel at a time. While it was still tacky and without adding any more paint to the roller, I very gently went back over it quickly which popped the bubbles and gave a textured look. I very quickly and very gently went over the entire vehicle one last time with the dry roller to help blend it together. I only re-added just a touch of paint if it was needed. It doesn't fully cure or harden until after 30 days like most other paints. I had the hood and windshield off and painted them separately. It was great with the roller because I didn't have to mask anything off.

Most people think it's a smoother bedliner coating. I've had someone key the tailgate and I've gotten other miscellaneous scratches. It's been great for a very easy fix that blends right back in.

Just found the closeup images if you're interested. This shows the texture I ended up with.

Looks very stealthy. Now is the time for story telling. ......

Question: "Where did the paint come from?"

Answer: "For a while I worked at a lab that produced the radar reflective coating they use on the stealth bomber. I go a can of rejected material and applied it to the CJ. To a police radar unit the CJ is no more than a black hole on the highway." :)

Im glad you answered this thread. Last year after the Pa winter I had to clean up and then rattle can the Cj again. This year its not as bad but I was going to do the same treatment. Now I think I'll Por-15 the spots after clean up and use your roller method. Question... Why a high heat Rustoleum and do they make the something similar in a no texture gloss black?

Thanks Pete. I found postings online of my PO putting POR-15 on the interior of mine 2-years prior to my owning it. When I bought it, any place that was exposed to sun was horrible and didn't hold up at all. The areas on the firewall in the shade are fine and look good. From his posting online it looks like he made all of the right preparations but the paint just didn't hold up to the exposure.

I only used that paint because I had just completed painting my BBQ'r some time before, liked the looks of it and had paint left over. It was difficult for me to clean off of anything including my hands, worse than any tar I've used on roofing. Figured it would be a good, temp solution. When I swapped my rear axle, I painted it in the same paint along with the rear wheel wells. Cannot believe how well it holds up.

I read of someone else mixing Rustoleum flat black with high-gloss black and getting a deep black satin look. In the right light, this BBQ paint has a very dark brown leather look to it which I hated at first but is now growing on me. Other times it looks like typical black.

It was easy enough that every now and then I debate about painting it another color for fun but my family really doesn't want me to so I've held off.

*edit* just saw your texture comment. The texture doesn't have to do with an additive to the paint, it's the method of application. I honestly don't know how you'd get a smooth finish unless you did the 'DIY Rustoleum Car Paint' method you see on some internet threads/Youtube videos or if you sprayed on a car paint in a booth. My BBQ'r left the brush marks so I figured a roller would give me the texture I wanted and it helped cover up a lot of imperfections.

I was going to eventually put monstaliner or something like it on but I like this for the ease of repair or changing colors if I want.

For some reason I was confusing high temp paint with wrinkle paint. I'm Still thinking about it even though it wouldn't be smooth. And the more I loo at those pics the more I like the Satin vs Gloss.

No word back as yet about the 'decal'.

Doesn't show much enthusiasm on their part does it. Where's Suz, she does this kind of work.

No it doesn't. Not sure what the problem is - I'll see if I can help move this along.

Anybody get this done yet?

No word back after several emails-

Hmmmmm too bad, it's always good to try to support a small company.

I'll see her tomorrow at our go topless event and ask her what's up. She's usually super responsive but maybe just overloaded with her full time work????
