So I’ve finally gotten the tub off my frame and am going to begin cleaning and painting. I live in a state that doesn’t have smog laws. Do you guys keep the canister or just get rid of it?

Mine was removed by the PO. I replaced it and it made a noticeable difference in the fuel smell. It also helped because he had the vents in the tank plugged. Now I have a properly vented tank.

I've got the original hooked up to the tank only. It still smells. I'm thinking about trying to take it apart and replace the filter media and charcoal.

Same thing as cglax for me. I got a new one and hooked it up correctly and the fuel smell went away.

You need to have all the ports hooked up correctly to get rid of the smell. The vacuum needs to pull the fumes out of the canister and into the motor to burn them off.

I came here this morning to make a thread about adding the charcoal canister back to my CJ7 . The PO put a AMC 304 in this Jeep and did away with all of that stuff. I’m also having some vapor lock type issues and I’m thinking the tank isnt venting correctly. I would also like to cut down on the fuel smell. Both of these issues seem worse when the tank is full of fuel.

How can I do this from scratch? Is there a minimum approach type way that works?

All you guys looking to get rid of the smell of fuel are just robbing yourselves of the true CJ experience LOL!

Cglax6 could you give some more detailed info? Sounds like you were in the same boat as myself.
There's a couple different styles you can get and make it work. I got the OEM three port style.

I re-plumbed my entire fuel system when I got a new tank several months ago. The PO also deleted the return-style fuel filter in addition to plugging the vent ports in the old tank. I had a lot of fueling issues before I got everything how it's supposed to be.

You can call up your favorite Jeep yard to get a used canister or buy a new one online. A quick Google search will lead you to pictures of how to set up the whole fuel system correctly.
