Hi all, new to this site, not new to jeeps or wrenching on cars. I have a Jeep CJ3a that is used as an on-farm rig, pulling pipe trailers, doing irrigation runs. Fairly light duty, lots of starts.

The problem I am having is this; The jeep starts great, throttles up fine, and will get me about halfway across the farm (about a mile) before the problem shows up. It starts dying when any throttle is applied, and seems to be flooding out(?).

I rebuilt the Carb, completely to specs, cleaned ever nook and cranny, blew out the jets, checked all settings, checked the gaskets and the heat gap, fuel filter, etc. Still does it. Runs fine until it warms up a bit, then as throttle is applied it dies. hard to restart, but if you catch it soon enough and let off the throttle, it will recover to an idle.

Brand new plugs, that seem to be very excessively fouled for how new they are, making me think flooding. That said, everything is set right, float checked, needles checked, jets, etc. Doesn't seem to be anything electronic related. I'm stumped. Any and all help/ ideas are appreciated.

Thank You!!

Welcome,

Did you set the float without the gasket on?
What measurement did you set the float at?

Without, per the instructions it was set to 3/8"

Is the choke plate all the way open?
LG

It is open all the way/ functioning normally.

Does it run alright at a higher RPM?
LG

No, it is not running correctly at a higher RPM. As i said, it idles just fine, runs good until it warms up (as in typical driving RPM range, not floored, but up there) and then refuses to run at high RPM. It will rev up, and then crash, if you let off the throttle you can sometimes save it, but typically it kills itself.

Thank you! Appreciate the help.

I would look at float level and jetting then.
Is there a fuel filter? If yes, change it.
When was the last time the coil or the points and condensor where changed?
LG

The jeep had a solid state ignition put on it a few years back, no problems on the electronic side of things. I checked the float height again, looks to be fine. The metering rod seems a bit sticky, as does the heart riser valve, both are clean though, put a couple drops of tri-flow on there to see if that helps.

Appreciate the help!

Did you inspect the float pin for grooves?
If you set the float and the pin has 2 grooves the float won't stay at the same setting and you will have flooding.
If the pin or spring in the float needle is damaged or missing this would cause flooding.
Is the float tang in good shape?
Could there be a pin hole in the float? Both would cause flooding as well.

Was there any mention of testing fuel pump? if there was ,great I missed it. If not ???

:agree:

I would also look for vacuum leaks.
