You are! I just got the call back from the local places, for 1 foot of 2" .25" wall its $60. WTF! I'm waiting on a price quote now for a stick of erw 1.75" .120" wall. I think* that should be reasonable, and I'll get that if it is.

get you calipers and go to the scrap table before you buy at the counter
they all have one as they always have the end of something or another, it is like beer money to them.
I have bought some real nice stuff off that table
bought a piece of 2x3 1/2 square tube once that I made a bumper out of for about 5 bucks. the most expensive part of that bumper was the pre cut receiver.

My issue is the steel places with City Desks don't handle this thick of tubing.

that bumper, I have less than 50 bucks in and I think the receiver prefab part is most of that.

Baja You have some great suppliers in your area, Totten Tubes comes to mind and they delivered a larger order for me an hour and a half away for free one time on there truck that makes scheduled runs north.
But for small quantity my only metals supply is a 70 mile round trip and that last time I was there I needed 2" solid square "tool bar" stock for my tractor and they only sold it in 16' lengths- I needd 4'.
Balancing delivery costs with gas+time costs with gotta have it now.

Just got back from the local steel yard, man its getting cold! Anyways the 1.5" i.d. stuff looked too big. Didn't buy anything. Came home and checked my bushing o.d., its 1.25". So now I'm really confused. I'm just going to go back tomorrow and get whatever my bushing will fit into. They are greasable poly bushinged shackles if that makes any sort of a difference.

FWIW when we buy stock at work if we don't want a full bar (16')
the steel houses charge $50 just to make a cut. Sometimes your better off
buying the whole bar.
I go to a local scrap yard here and find a lot of good pieces for scrap price.

This may help, looks like there are YJ large and YJ small bushings. Do yours use a sleeve with the bolt?

I answered my own question I think, Yes?
Anyway as CJim7 alluded to way back, the important thing is that they build up to the same width, so that the shackles are parrallel and pinched or loose at either end.

cut prices is what made me a fan of the scrap table

I always walk off with steel the wife ask what I need that for

I just reply " It was Cheap"

but I can go through my pile and find stuff all the time. It is nice to have a bunch of scraps when you are doing what I call "BAJA FAB"
And that is just getting out the torch and welder and going for it. It may not look like a Piece you paid Orfab 200 dollars for, but I bet mine wont break.

One last question. Why is going to a YJ spring better than just using my cj spring?

They are supposed to flex better. Also if you didn't know they are 2.5" wide compared to 1.75" for old cj's to 2" for the newer cjs' fronts.

I built some mounts today. Turned out alright, lots of satisfaction comes from building things, I almost forgot how much. I think it will hold, and hope it does.



Hole sawed the box tube, 1.5x2"


Then hammered it down just a bit to hold onto the tube, 1.25" schedule 80 black pipe…..I know...
