Bought on a whim and would like to hear that I can do something( anything) to maximize my gas mileage, other than get a conch. Basically a grocery getter for a little place I got in Florida: something fun for visitors, but I don't want to break their bank. Loved my mileage from my '92 YJ, guess I can cut the driveshaft, drill bellhousing etc and swap, but would like to hear about the bolt-on Saturn ODif anyone would care to fill me in. Thanks in advance.

What year CJ5 ? Transmission and Transfer Case ?

If I remember correctly the OD you asked about uses the PTO opening on the D18 Transfer Case . I'm assuming you have a Dana 20 case now (but with Jeeps you never know what people have put in them) Since the Dana 20 doesn't have a PTO port you would have to uses a OD that would attach to the back of the Dana 20 and would be good for 2 WD only, and I'm not sure they make them or that you would even have room for the OD because a CJ5 is so short.

Believe it or not, the CJ5 with the AMC 304 really isn't that bad on mileage as long as you keep your foot out of it... :) A good tune up and a ginger right foot is the best thing you can do for the money. There is always a FI setup also - costly with little in mileage as a return.

Yeah, you need to define, "bad mileage"... my 11-12 mpg is actually pretty good for the AMC 304 and that is fuel injected to boot... there is solutions to all problems... tire size, gear ratios, etc. Intake/Exhaust, new carb, etc. can also be a route to go through.

I was confused about cuttring driveshafts, etc. A 5 is a short wheel based vehicle, so if you think about putting in your drive train from teh YJ, keep in mind that it is short and might not fit or have fitment issues or perhaps angle issues with the driveshafts.

Thanks guys.Will check 18/20~~~
What year CJ5 ?

The 18 was last put in the 5 in 1971... The 18 has an offset rear output - you can't put it in a CJ that currently has a center rear output without swapping axles.
