Are the ring and pinion interchangeable?

I found out that my CJ5 differentials are 4.27 and I'd like a taller ratio for street use. Figured I'd find a complete set of axles to swap, but ran across a 3.07 ring and pinion for the Dana 30 out of a YJ. (I can buy a new ring and pinion in the same ratio for the Dana 44 .)

I'm a little confused by your post. Is the 3.07 a swap out including the carrier?

IMHO - changing 4.27 is kinda out there... 4.27 is a great intermediate gear. :)

My goal is to stay ON the street--particularly in snow and ice. My last two 4x4s (non-Jeep) revved at 3000 rpm at 60 mph. With 4.27s my CJ5 would do the same.

With taller gearing I could keep the revs down.

I'm not a yj guy so I'm not sure if the yj had a high pinion 30 or not.
If it is a high pinion than no it won't work, if it's a low pinion 30 I THINK the gears should work.
One thing for sure is you will need new carriers for both the front and rear.
You can look up a gear set for the cj and the yj and see if it's the same part number to know for sure.

the carrier break for a Dana 44 is 3:73/3:92 and the 30 is 3:54/3:73

OPPS :p I was thinking the AMC20 for some reason. Which the 3.07 and up use the same carrier. Sorry for the brain fart.

No. The YJ Dana 30 is a reverse cut (high pinion) gearset. All CJ Dana 30 's are standard cut.

Aha. I posted above before I saw your response. Okay, so I throw this onto the bad-idea pile and go to work on swapping on a newer windshield. (Meanwhile I'll keep an eye out for complete axles with 3.73s.) Thanks.
