Don't be afraid of a CJ that needs a little work, just have a mechanic check it out before you buy it. Most of them that drive and handle bad have worn suspension and steering parts which is normal. Since you want to lift it, a lift kit will replace most of the worn components anyway. Ball joints and tie-rod ends are inexpensive and should be replaced anyways. Besides, the price of a CJ7 that is rust free and drives like new will make you swallow your gum.

Another option is a YJ. Not quite as basic as a CJ but much more "Jeep" than a TJ. You can get them pretty cheap, most have fuel injected engines and galvanized bodies, and you can put a CJ front clip on them pretty easy.(You're going to paint it anyway) Just a couple thoughts.

I like the white '82 the best. The lifted '76 has probably seen a little rougher life and the '75 is actually a '76-'79. It's a QuadraTrac which I'm not a fan of.

Getting in late here but I agree with most everyone about a CJ7 . When I got my first real Jeep, I drove all versions and ended up with a 84 CJ. There really is nothing better than a CJ. Just the simplicity and ruggedness, if that is a word! :) 12,500 for the green one really isn't bad, if it really had been done frame off. I picked up my CJ7 for $6000 and it was rough. We had $15000 in it when my wife made me give it up and we did not do a restoration. UGH Good luck Sky! As you can see, everyone here will help. Jeepers are good people.

Pretty hard to see from the size of those pics. The Weber is a upgaded carb ( feeds fuel to the engine ) and makes for easier starting and a smoother idle. From what I can see of it it looks ok.

X2 what Pete said. If the price is right, might be a good place to start. Looks pretty complete. As said before, rust is the enemy so if the tub is in good shape and there isn't anything glaring - a quick checkout by a mechanic is always a good thing. And there isn't anything that can't be fixed with money. :P Jeep - Just Empty Every Pocket!

I know sorry...I couldn't figure out how to make them bigger.

I'm going to go look at it now. I hope I make it 2.5 hours home.

It has 4 speed manual.

The temp guage doesn't work. I guess I'll just look for smoke or smelling hot lol.

Probably will have 3500 to get it home. Do you think that's a good price?

If the body is decent and it runs fine Id say thats a legit price.

:chug:

Well....I got a good lesson in jeep buying yesterday I guess.

Drove 2.5 miles to see it- and it was full of rust. The radiator leaked, the engine had a miss, the frame under the driver seat was so rusted when you moved the seat it lifted the floor off the frame area....ect.

Thank God my dad went with me to bring me back to reality! I probably would have come home with it- cause "all jeeps have rust, Dad!" The nostalgia, for the lack of a better term, could have sold me on it, even though it rode like a log wagon.

He did me a favor by telling me I was crazy for wanting it. After I got home without it- and thought about it for a while- I got it.

It sucks coming home with nothing. But- I'll keep looking I guess.

Don't rush it the right one for you is out there. My best advise to you is look at a bunch then pick the one that's the best for the money. You never want to buy the first one you look at because then a better one comes along and you are :bang:

I'm trying not to rush....but that's hard for me lol.

What is the main difference between an pre82 and 82+ year model?

You guys said it was wider but what does that really mean for me anyway?

Is it unsafe? I'm not going to be climbing hills or 4-wheeling. But I don't want to go around a curve and it tip over either!

Are the interiors the same?

Reason I ask- it seems there are more available that are older than 82 models. Such as:

1980 jeep cj7

1977 Jeep CJ7 with hardtop and 304 V8

What do you think about these two?

New transm. and 30,000 on rebuilt motor- he says no rust. but its 2.5 hours from my house.
84 jeep cj

Or

1980 jeep cj7

Don't know anything about it yet- but its only 1 hour away

I kinda like the red (84) one. (except for the steering wheel)
The one with the 350 looks good but I would want to check out the conversion really good.
I think for you the closer to stock the better, unless you have someone with that really knows jeeps.

Thanks Old Dog.

Closer to stock....I am trying to remind myself that.

Do you think that is a fair price?

No- I don't have anyone that knows jeeps very well....other than you guys! :D

I only say close to stock because so many people do mods and have no idea what they are doing. We hear horror stories all the time. Now if the mods are done right they are fine, but you need to know what your looking at.
As for price it's hard to say as prices very so much. Kinda depends on what you want to spend. But it looks like a normal price for around my neck of the woods.
What part of Ky. are you from if I may ask.

When I saw "except for the steering wheel" I was like :wtf:. Then I saw it and um yeah I agree. :) Closer to stock is definately good advice. Especially for the needs you have for your Jeep. I dont think Id drive 2.5 hrs to see that Jeep without more detailed up close pics.

I live in Paducah- which is w. Kentucky on the border of Il and MO.

The steering wheel has to go- I agree. Who does that anyway? The wheels too as well.
