Good Evening All,
Restoring a 1978 CJ7 with QuadraTrac differential and Turbomatic 400 automatic tranny. This thing has a computer behind the dash that I would love to do away with. Is this possible? I've seen online that people have gotten rid of them, but is it safe to do on these jeeps. I still have the stock Weber Carb, but I did remove all of the emissions junk and simply plugged the holes.

Anyway, Can I get rid of this computer, and if so, what can I remove and where do I re-route the wires?

Will it cut out certain devices or abilities on other parts of the jeep, like oil temp sensors or the like(Oil temp should obviously still work, but that idea)?

Thanks,
Austen

I have an 81 so I guess your referring to that box on the drivers fenderwell. I think all that does is control the distributor. I came off the selinoid to power the distributor and got rid of the box

You can rid of the computer but it controls some of the ignition timing. The distributor needs to be modified so it can fully advance mechanically or better yet replace it with an aftermarket unit. This is part of the concept behind the Team Rush upgrade that floats around the Jeep boards.

Just curious does that behind the dash box also manipulate the carter bbd carb? When I removed mine I was under the impression it did.

The answer to this yes. And if you do the Nutter Bypass mod you can ditch the computer behind your dash. I have done it.

78 wouldn't be computer controlled......

Hey guys- I made a mistake. I have two jeeps, a 1978 and a 1986 Laredo . I'm combining the two. The 86' didn't have an engine, but the wiring harness was still everywhere, and it DID have a computer. My mistake- I used the '78's engine and wiring harness which did not have a computer. THe computer was sitting amidst the piles of wiring and therefore I thought it went it. I apologize.
