CJ7 Gearbox white grease?

Hi, iv been using this forum as a brilliant reference for my CJ7 rebuild and happy to say it's back on the road, just! Heard a banging from the Transfer Case so opened up the cover under the gear shift and found a load of white, cream like grease! Is this supposed to be there? Bought some fluid to fill up, hence the reason I was taking the cover off! Any and all help appreciated!

It's a T-4 , iv got the 75-90 fully synth oil, found the fill plug, just that it's solid! Gearbox was making some suspicious noises and wanted to make sure that it's not in pieces! Tried to upload but picture file size was too big. I'm post some pictures when I get home if I can't get it sorted before. I don't know if the P.O. had it in deep water, it came to me in a mess so anything could have happened!

T-4 is a Transmission . Ck it's oil level.......
You have a Dana 300 t'case.
The fill for the t'case is on the back and it's a square(4 sided)plug. Fill with oil till the oil comes out the fill plug.
The drain for the 300 is under the lower side of the housing and is a Allen type set-screw.
You can run the syn 75W in the t'case with no issue.

Ok, so I took the top nut off and that thick white grease came out? Should I drain this out and fill with 75w-90?

If your Transfer Case is full of white lithium grease instead of 90w gear oil, you may have serious problems. I would pull the drain plug from the underside of the Transfer Case and see if any gear oil comes out. If the only thing in there is grease, it may have suffered damage from lack of lubrication.

As a side note, if your Transmission is full of grease too, that is bad also.

Gear oil=good
Grease=bad, unless its just some remnants from where someone lubed the shifter mechanism, but if it is FULL of grease, that is not good.

You need to flush this 'grease' out before adding the gear oil.
Would still like to see some pictures, to see what you're deal'n with.
White 'foam' can also be from water get'n inside.

I'd be surprised if his gear box is filled white lithium grease.
When he said he removed the Transmission cover plate and seen the white stuff I assumed he was looking at the Transfer Case linkage. WLG made sense there.

It would be way expensive to fill the box with WLG. Although stranger things have happened.

From the excellent pictures it does look somewhat like WLG.
I think I see water droplets in the shift lever........
Start look'n for rust on the inside.
WEIRD:eek:
Has the diffs been ck'd??

I reckon it's maybe emulsified the oil. I haven't checked the diffs yet. Pretty sure that's gonna be the same right? Any tips on flushing?

Lots of solvent.......
It's gonna be a PITA to do. Gotta be done.
I wouldn't drive it till done.

EXTRA creamy....
After the tranny is drained. Reinstall the drain plug and fill it up with solvent from the shifter tower. Let it sit for a bit and drain again. Repeat 1 more time.
With the t'case-Do the same and you'll have to insert the solvent through the oil fill hole.
Lacquer thinner will work well here for solvent.
Good luck!
