IIRC the tranny is 2-3 qts and about the same for the t'case.

This might not be the modern RIGHT way to do it, but this works on a farm and it's what I'd do. Remember one thing about me, I'm a Marvel Mystery oil fanatic, :). I'd fill it up with MMO, Drop the Transfer Case in neutral, fire the CJ up and run it in gear for a few minutes, no load, just a good slosh around. Let it sit for a day, then run it again and drain. The very same thing can be done more inexpensively with turpentine. With no load on the gears nothing will be hurt, especially with turpentine. Those light oils will find a way into the small spaces. I would do the same until the fluids came out clean. If you choose MMO, you would not need it after the initial application, turpentine will flush just fine. ...... You very likely have gear surface damage from the water in the oil. Oddly enough you won't have damage under the oil level, the damage will be ABOVE the oil level where oxygen can get at the water.

HH, I agree about using MMO.
I would try it after a solvent soak of the tranny and t'case.

Part of the magic of MMO is that it is a solvent. A super gunk and grease cleaner. That is one of the reasons it's good in both fuel and the crank case.

Lumpy - what solvent would you recommend?

I have used Lacquer thinner for this in the past, dang good oil/grease 'cutter'.
The main solvent in MMO is a Stoddard solvent, which is also known as turpentine or mineral spirits.
FWIW: I have for years used a 50/50 mix of Turpentine and ATF for a bore cleaner.

:) but But Lumpy - Come here and let me speak quietly, "listen, Turpentine isn't red, it doesn't come in a really cool old fashioned red can and most importantly Turpentine smells like Turpentine it doesn't have that wonderful minty MMO smell." Everybody that's anybody knows that Ancient Alien Theorists say, "MMO has "other worldly" qualities."

........ If I/we keep going there will be trouble for being "off topic".

.....All this really means is that the Transmission needs to be flushed before new gear oil is added.

There's a reason WHY they put that 'fresh minty smell' in MMO.
