Clutch linkage help

Well me and my sisters fiance were doing a oil change yesterday, he decided he was a expert and knew everything about cars. Very persistent and wouldn't listen, he decided to "fix" the linkage so it was a little tighter. Well now it is making a whining or grinding kind of noise and is not feeling like it did at all before. I attempted adjusting it but I can't get it right, any tips?

You should have a 1" of free play at the top of the pedal.

So it shouldn't engage or have pressure till I press down about a inch?

Yes because you don't want your throwout bearing hitting the pressure plate until you push on the clutch.

Im about to be off work ask I can go fix it, but currently there is no free play at all. That would mean I have to shorten the rod correct?

if by shorting the rod you mean looseing the lock nut and screwing the end in to make it shorter than yes. Do it until you have at least an 1" of free play at the top of your clutch pedal then you should be good. And don't forget to tighten the lock nut back up when you get it there.

I can't seem to get it right, I think I'm just doing something wrong. When I get it about a inch of free play it grabs fine but it's grinding or whining when I release the clutch.

There should be two adjustments on the linkage.

One is easiest to get at from the wheel well, the other is right down at the fork.

Do you know which one he moved?

It should just be as easy as putting it back where it was before. You should be able to see discoloration on the threads from where he moved it.

it's making a whining noise when I have it in a gear but the clutch is put down. I dont want to damage anything so I really appreciate the support. The clutch seems to be grabbing fine and it's fairly tight. One thing I noticed is the fork is vibrating up and down a lot at the moment, and the pedal is loose I could say, meaning if I put my foot under the pedal, I could lift it about half a inch.

I'm looking into replacing the entire clutch system and all other components, could you possibly recommend brands, all recommended parts to replace, and tools. I've only changed the clutch in my motorcycle and srt-4, but I'm assuming it will all be similar.

If it was working okay before I don't know why you would replace anything; just put it back to where it was before your future bro in law screwed it up.

You should have a little play at the pedal but its actually transmitted up from the fork. So if you have someone watch the fork from below, when you push the pedal the first inch or so, the fork should move maybe 1/2 inch before you feel pressure and start depressing the clutch.

He may have adjusted it so tight that you are over depressing the clutch.

If you really want to replace the clutch, Summit or Jegs all sell good stuff. Centerforce is probably the most known for high performance but you may not need that level of performance or cost.

keep in mind, if this adjustment problem just started and is causing problems, they'll still be there when you install the new clutch. I think you should fix that problem before replacing the clutch.

2 when the pressure is removed fron the peddle does it continue to whine??
3 If it continues to whine in step 2, when you lift on the peddle does it still whine??

When you step on the peddle with the engine running and put it in gear does the Transmission grind and go into gear with difficulty??

Sorry for the delay in response, when the peddle is depressed it does not whine, When I remove pressure from the peddle it does not whine ever except for when I'm coasting down the road lets say at 40, I press the clutch in because I'm going down a hill or people are slowing down. That is when there is a whine and then when I'm downshifting as I put it into gear its very tough and you can hear it whine for a second till its all the way in.

I think you may have bent either the fingers on the pressure plate or the fork that holds the throw out bearing our you burned up the throw out bearing. From pushing it to far.

you have not yet mentioned what Transmission you have and it is not in your profile. I think this is sounding more like a Transmission problem than a clutch problem. And maybe , not even a problem.

I finally found the right spot and got the clutch to engage perfectly, but for some reason I'm finding my self re adjusting it almost every other day. I swear that I'm tightening the nut down. But it keeps getting loose somehow?

Ok I was thinking about using that, but the lock nut is still tight even after everything has adjusted.
