Not surprised considering the other things we have found. I think the only tools the PO had was a cutting torch, a grinder and a hammer.

And .... OMG what was someone thinking. That bottom piece was intentionally cut.

Unfortunately it looks like you are going to need a new bell housing pretty soon. Most of the strength in an aluminum housing is in the big thick bolt ring at the front of the housing. With yours cut and broken up like it is there is very little keeping it from cracking and spoiling your day big time.

Ugh. Might was well start looking. Any differences between years or will any bell housing for a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , manual Transmission do?

Sorry, I don't have an answer that I would swear was correct. With that being said I believe you will need a CJ jeep T-18 bell housing.
 
Besides the T-18 bell you can use a T-150 bell after you drill and tap it. The T-150 bell wouldn't be hard to find.
 
The T-176 can be used as well, but harder to find then a T-150
 
I've been wanting the hydraulic system. Had done some reading on it and it appeared everyone had to jerry-rig theirs somehow at least with the clutch pedal arrangement and had troubles getting it set up correctly. I had been hoping it was more of a straight bolt-on type job. Was there any welding or custom pieces you had to do to get yours to work?

I'd be happy to post pics and details when I get to that point in my build. And what fun would it be with a bolt on, isn't that what all the jk guys do? ;)

I can't tell you how many times I got twisted up and lost my mechanical clutch especially in my 2a.

The mechanical clutch is easier to repair on the trail then a hydraulic clutch, but I'm not sure why anyone with a bad hydraulic or mechanical clutch would need to be towed off the trail. There isn't a need to use the clutch to start or drive it. When I stall on a hill I always start the engine in gear without using the clutch. I can also shift gears without a clutch by boosting the engine rpms then shifting when it drops. It would get you to a trail head were you can find a parts runner if need be.

Neuner I'm in the same boat as Posi - Tried a few different rebuilds on the linkage and went hydraulic - never looked back yet. So far I still have the parts and pedal set up to be able to trail swap back to linkage in a emergency (slave cyl blowout etc) Though not sure they got back in there after the last cleanout... :rolleyes: Can always do as Posi said above as well.

Love the feel and no more binding on twisting etc. Also much better on my clutch life itself.
