Hey guys,

So, my 84 CJ has a computer under the dash. How is this different form the more modern computers? What if this goes bad, are these even available anymore? The CJ is carbed so i would assume the computer is more for emissions than anything else correct?

The computer adjusts your timing and air fuel mixtures. The best thing to do is the nutter bypass it will take the computer out of the mix. I did it to mine and it helped alot and it is real easy to do. The two best things I have done to mine is the nutter bypass and the teamrush upgrade next will be the 2100 carb.

Hey Mtnwhlr!

I would love to do that but I have to worry about emissions tests every two years. it's :dung:!

The computers can go bad, but you can pick up used ones... Jeep CJ ECU Vintage Stock Computer Electronics Original | eBay

Not sure if there are new ones.

So if you stick with the computer you should really get your vacuum system tight since a leak anywhere in the system will cause bad signals to the computer which will then mess with your carb and timing...which could cause your jeep to run like stinky doo.

So do I you just have to make it look factory. Most of the people here just look for a O2 sensor and thats about it. I passed it last year and no one was the wiser.

You can have your existing computer rebuilt for about the same money as it would cost to buy another used, thirty-year-old one.

Hey do they not test your emissions? Did removing all of that throw off your emissions (doing the nutter bypass?)

No they do emissions here and by doing all that it makes it run better and didn't really changed the visual so they had no clue.
