I've been wanting to rebuild my son's steering rag joint, or coupler to the steering box, to fix some play in the steering. I watched a video about how to get the joint out, but it involved pulling the column, taking the shaft completely out, pressing the pin out that the pieces ride on, etc... looks like a pain in the ***.

Does anyone have experience with this work? The shaft looks like it is collapsible, but are there pins in it that hold it until it were to collapse or does it slide freely? I am contemplating just buying the whole new shaft with joint for $110 so I don't have to do all the :dung: I saw to rebuild it.

the steering shaft has 2 plastic sheer pins in them to keep the shaft from wobbling so they wont slide apart, as far as rebuilding the joint i have no experience with it, i bought a borgenson shaft its really nice

There aren't really good choices for rebuilding, most parts are either crown or omix. I bought a omix intermediate HD shaft and it's a lightweight compared to the Borgeson shaft, which will be my replacement when this one starts to show signs of slop.

OBTW the CJ s don't use a rag style coupler, its a bell style coupler. FSJs do use the rag style through.
