1985 CJ 7. Motor is out of a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Original Transmission, transfer case, and diffs.
So I recently bought my first jeep...1985 CJ7 . The previous owner swapped in a 4.0 Inline 6 from a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee (even though the old motor was still good)...so my engine compartment is a mess with a poorly done motor swap, but I ran the jeep several times a few months before I bought it (a friend owned it), so I knew what I was getting into. However, when I showed up to pick up the jeep and load it onto the trailer, it wouldn't start. Now that I got it home I have changed all fuses under the steering column, replaced rotor, distribution cap, plugs, wires, crankshaft position sensor, ignition coil, fuel filter (only because he had one when I picked up the Jeep), all relays I can see in the engine compartment....still won't start. The motor cranks all day, without starting. I've been getting pressure from the Schrader valve so I'm sure I am still getting fuel from the fuel pump. I do not have a spark from my distributor, but the coil shows voltage when tested. I am completely stumped with what could be causing the crank/no start issue. My next guess would be to replace ignition switch, but a mechanic friend of mine is bringing his compression tester from his Benz dealership to test for compression. ANY and all suggestions would be awesome. As far as I can tell, when the motor swap was done they left everything from the CJ that they could, so basically only the motor and some wiring is from the Grand Cherokee. I look forward to someone helping me out!! Thank you,

Dustin G.

I think you answered your dilemma yourself, "I do not have a spark from my distributor."

I'm not sure what you mean that the coil has voltage when tested. When cranking pull the coil from the top of the distributor and see if a spark jumps. If it jumps then the coil is most likely good. If it doesn't, then you have other problems.

I have not answered my own question....I need one of the Jeepsters here to help me figure out what to do next!? Am I correct in thinking that it's the ignition switch? Should I be attempting some other tests or replacing other parts that are known to go out and cause this problem? Thank you,

Dustin G.
