I'm rebuilding my Dana 20 with the Novak kit. My first step in reassembly was the rear output cap. I need some help understanding the end play. I know how to measure it, but can't figure out what causes it.

I pressed both bearing cups into the cap.
Then front bearing onto the shaft.
Then speedometer gear.
No shims (Novak's kit has 5 super thin ones, I think I took out 1 or 2 thick ones). I didn't check end play before teardown.
Insert shaft into output housing and press on rear bearing.
Both bearings and cups seated firmly using a press.

I haven't put the yoke on yet, but I can't detect any fore/aft movement on the shaft. I think end play should be .001 to .003. Is zero OK?

With the housing sandwiched between the two tapered bearings, I can't see how there can be any end play at all. Should I drive the shaft out (forward) a few thousandths so there is some play?

Do the shims make the shaft tighter (less endplay) or looser (more end play)?

Thanks
Dave
