Dana 20 speedometer problem

I have a 1980 CJ5 . It has a new speedo cable and checked speedo with drill. It works. The problem I have is after about 45 mph it drops down and gets real bouncy. Anyone have any insight on this?

Cable (both ends and between) in good shape? The speedo gear in the gear box could be "iffy" also.

When you checked it with the drill did you run it up past 50 mph to see if it did the same thing? It's either the speedo or the cable.

It went up to 65.

Then as said before you need to replace the cable.

No what I am saying is the cable worked and so did the speedo with the drill. It's just when it's hooked to the transfer that it won't rotate up to speed.

Speedo good.
Cable good.

Make sure when the cable is connected to the speedometer and the Transmission . that the cable isn't binding, kinking or has any drastic tight bends through it's entire length.

Other than that possibility, it may be time to crack the slush box open to get at the gear to see what kind of shape it's in.

That's what I was thinking too. I checked the cable and everything is smooth.

Are youi positive your getting a really good seat in the Transmission witht he cable? Sometimes the cable is juuuusssstttt long enough, if the cable is barely making it, it can slip some in the socket.

With that being said, these speedometers can be a little odd. When my CJ first got back on the road the speedometer would initially show a speed about 6 mhp slow. No surprise there, it was even expected. What wasn't expected was that after a little while the speed would drop I.E. 55 = 49 .... 55 = 40 ..... 55 = 30 ..... eventually 55 = 23. So, I gave it up as a loss and started using my car GPS for speed and distance. After about 600 miles I started noticing that the speed seemed to have stabilized at a steady 6 mph under actual speed. The odometer has always been accurate. Some how the speedometer sorta fixed itself. I suppose it might be possibele for yours to do the same.

That would be nice but my odometer is off too. It's the last thing left to fix and it's kicking my butt. I think I am gonna pull the tail shaft this weekend and see what's up with it.
