Dana 20 what goes in these 2 holes?

Started rebuilding the Dana 2 Transfer Case and was wondering what is suppose to be screwed into the 2 larger holes in the photo. Both had what appeared to be just a plastic screw in thread protector both were badly damaged. They go right in to the shifter lever shafts.

From the factory they put in plastic plugs there but they are not needed.
The purpose of those holes is for disassembling the tcase. When you remove the shift rails the ball detent springs will come out. They are under the shift rail.

Some transfer cases could have a switch in the front shift fork. This could turn on a 4WD indicator light.

They are also used for 4 wheel drive indicator switchs/lights, they work similiar to the reverse light switch on your manual Transmission . If you look closely down each of the holes you will see a recessed area of the rail which is where the spring ball detent switch would ride.

I installed some pipe plugs. When I disassembled my Transfer Case the first time it was full of sand and dirt around the shift rails. Not good!

As purple said, I'd install something in there lightly to keep the dirt and grime out. (or water if you submarine race like me )

Thanks guys. I'll install plugs. Doesn't look like tapered pipe threads though.
