I have a 76 CJ5 that I am working on rebuilding. My current issue is on re gearing the front differential. The original gears that came out of it were 3.53’s (or 46/13). The gears I had purchased for re gearing are 4.88’s. Currently my understanding is that there are two different styles of carriers one for the higher gear ratios (3.73 and up) and a style for the faster gear ratios like the 3.53 that came in my axels. That being said Does anyone know for sure that my 4.88 gears will not fit with my 3.53 carrier or will i need to buy the different style carrier to fit the 4.88’s

You are correct. The split in gearing for the different carriers is @ 3.73 and up. A 3.53 carrier will not work for 4.88 gears. :(
Thanks for the confirmation, Do you know if I will run into the same problem on the rear AMC20 carrier, (it isnt the stock carrier it was replaced with a Detroit style locker)

The split for the AMC20 is 3.08.

The split for the AMC20 is 3.08.
That's a great locker. I have one also. The sudden release when going around a tight turn can really get your attention! :chug:
