I opened the center housing last week and my differential fluid was loaded with muddy fluid (looked like the worse case of this poopies I’ve seen) The axles tubes were also caked. So today I took a pressure washer and blew out the tubes, which worked out well. I also cleaned the inner differential with the pressure washer. Now I’ve got to replace not only my carrier bearing but also my pinion bearings. When I replace these bearing with oem style and shim everything just as it came out should I be ok? What’s the best way for a novice to resolve this? All the mud has pooled down behind my pinion gear and it’s pretty gritty when dry right now?

Thanks for the help

I had a neighbor set up my R&P's cause I wasn't tooled up for that, and I wussed out. Someone will be along shortly that can answer your question. My answer to this one wouldn't be reliable.

Start with your stock shims and check your contact pattern with the lead paste. The FSM will tell you what to do if it’s incorrect

Also, don't forget to check back lash, carrier pre-load, and pinion pre-load once everything is back together. Putting everything back where it was is a good starting point, but if things are as bad as you say, all your specs will probably be very loose and require a fresh setup.

Unless you have done R&P work before. Get a pro to do it, and watch.
Lots of special tools needed here(Bearing puller, bearing press, dial indicator, in/lb and ft/lb torque wrenches)along with knowing how to 'read' a gear pattern.
I say this, as someone who has done R&P installs for over 50 yrs.
Best of luck to you. :chug:

I’ve been setting up gears for 16 years or so......listen to what lumpy says.

I think I’ll go down the professional route at some point. I cleaned out everything with three cans of brake cleaner which helped substantially. I haven’t removed the pinion yet so I’m going to hold off and put it all back together as is right now. I’m in the early stage of my rebuild and 4x4 isn’t the #1 priority right now. I’ll have it rebuilt eventually. Thoughts on this plan?

I personally wouldn’t wanna do it but once.

:agree:
It's something that is very useful to be able to do, but not exactly like changing a set of spark plugs. I agree, if you never did one before, get someone with experience and tools and watch them do it.

If you need to do a new setup, here is an article I wrote on making slip bearings for the diff to help with shim setting. :) (shameless plug )
