Dana 300 Flat Tow?

OK so if I decide to keep the 91 CJ7 with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 4 Speed with stock axles what should I do to the 300 Transfer Case ? I plan to Flat Tow the CJ7 behind the Motorhome and should consider any advice. Some have stated that the 300 isn't good for this but others have had no issue.

I would suggest removing the rear driveshaft. The Dana 300 has poor lubrication when the rear is rotating and the front is not. This can be verified by putting your hand on it after a good tow, it can get quite hot. The other Jeep transfer cases aren't much better.

If you plan to make flat towing the CJ7 a regular thing I suggest a rear axle full float kit with locking hubs. That would be alot easier than taking the rear driveshaft off and putting it back on throughout your trip. The other "fix" I've read about a few years ago was to pull the 300 case apart and weld tabs onto one of the gears to splash oil the internals while towing. I think it was in either 4 Wheel and Offroad or 4 Wheeler magazines.

2x on both posts. Not much to add except shorter flat tows should not be an issue. You can drive cj every hundred miles to help lube the case.

I wish they still made those but you can't get them anymore. Warn was one company that made them.

As the others have said you are best off removing the rear driveshaft. If you were only going accross town I'd say keep your front hubs locked and your Transfer Case in neutral.

1st a correction it is an '81 Laredo , sorry.

I would love to get a Rear Axle Float Kit but like BusaDave9 stated they are not available anymore new and I am still looking for an older kit.
Pulling the DS just isn't realistic when using as a tow vehicle behind a Motorhome day after day at this stage. I do make sure that I start the CJ every couple of hundred miles while I walk the dogs and stretch my legs.
Modifying the 300 sounds like the best advice so far. Anyone have a link to more information on this modification?

While I'm sure that could work still an extra hassle. I had a Tow Dolly and sold it to someone who didn't know better (in my opinion!). I have a great Car Trailer but even that is a hassle when you get to an RV Park, storing it means that it is either in your way or paying for an extra site or storage.

I'd much rather correct the problem by installing Oil Slingers and go my merry way.

PS Anyone know about the TJ Towing Issues? maybe that is another solution but I would rather not give up my CJ7 !!!

No problem flat towing TJ. Many many on the road and in RV parks.Procedure for mine (2004 sahara 4.0 w auto). Transfer Case in neutral,Transmission in park,key in first off position so steering is unlocked.plug in lights and go . This is per factory driver manual.
Towed thousands of miles w/no problems. mike s.
