2:72 gears puts allot of torque load on the tranny and t'case-not good.
OP-what size tires and R&P ratio are you run'n now?

3.73`s are free-way flyers.
2.72`s are auto-bons.
4,10/11`s are drag/truck.
5.38`s are cliff climbers.
Have not heard of the others.

and 3.73 r&p.Original owner had put a 700r Transmission with a conversion kit.My top speed now is about 55-60 mph according to my speedometer that kinda floats around. I actually have an appt. with a tranny guy that has done work for me previously to take a look at it and make sure everything is right. I wouldnt mind alittle more top speed as my hunting spots take a little drive time.

Stay with 3:73.
You see what I run and can hit 75+ with ease.

The 700R is an Overdrive Transmission . with 3:73 gears and 33's 90mph should be no problem. Makes me wonder if your speedo is off or something else is wrong.

It is off if the speedo gear in the t'case wasn't changed.
OP-IF you have access to a GPS. Use it to confirm ground speed.
If you have the coin-run'n 4:10's with 33's and an auto would be a good set up.;)
Be a good time to add some LSD or locking diffs too-:D

old dog i agree!!! ever since I bought this jeep 3 years ago i always felt that something is not right! I bought it with a bad motor and the tranny kit already in it and have been trying to figure it all out ever since.Rebuilt the top half of the motor and all was good, just no top end at all.I did all the upgrades, team rush, nuttered, weber 32/36,and it runs much better but once again no top end. Got to be in that tranny somewhere.I'm going to make sure the gears on the tags are what i actually have. Both on the jeep and the rear axle i bought . Hopefully tomorrows a garage day!!!!

I will try the gps this weekend and let you know.......

Petescj, that's funny I was talking nicknames.

My suggestion if you feel 3.73s aren't where you want to be (and I believe that ms what you need) is to go to http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Great tool...

Wow..........with all the interesting advise I'm sure you are now totally confused.

As suggested go to grim's gear ratio chart and plug your numbers in.........If you truly have a 700r4 it has a 70% 4th gear or 30% Overdrive ...........that would mean that your 3.73's in 4th gear are now 2.61 to 1 ratio.............gear your vehicle for where it will spend the most time..........if that's freeway then so be it, but as Old Dog stated correctly in order for your motor to be at the correct RPM that combination would far exceed the speed limit........The great benefit of a 700r4 is the Overdrive which allows you to run Lower gear ratios until your in 4th when you get the benefit of the 30% OD.

thanks T99 and yes abit confused by it all.Hope fully it will all come together soon. Thanks to work,I won't get much jeep time next week but will try to keep you guys posted on what i find on the tranny.Idid open the Dana 44 and found 49-18 on the ring gear. But then stamped in much bigger letters next to it was "374".I will do some counting later tonight in the garage !!Thanks again for the info!:chug:

The 49 & 18 on the ring gear are referring to the correct match for that gear set...........49 ring /18 pinion=2.72 ratio.........so the ratio in the 44's were as marked 2.72 to 1.

You either have a choice of re-gearing the 44's to 3.73 to match your front axle or do them both to get an overall better ratio.....as I mentioned before the 3.73 in 4th gear on a 700r4 OD will be like having a (3.73 x70% =) 2.61 final gear.......which is way to tall / slow of a gear for most motor's............ The good news is in 3rd gear it is still 1/1 so that ratio would be 3.73 /1. So if you don't mind running that Transmission like a 3 speed that combo is still possible..........
Normally when a Jeep goes to 33 inch tires from the factory 30-31"s a gear change to 4.11 or lower is needed just to get your motor RPM back to normal.

If you would like some added performance not in Horsepower but mechanically "Off and on Road" via a gear ratio change now is the time to think that out..........as the 700R4 is a great Transmission to help your vehicle feel more snappy at low speeds from 1st through 3rd gear and then into 4th with the 30% OD..............Right now for you to get near back to 3.73 as a final drive ratio when in 4th gear at 30% Overdrive the axle ratio would now need to be 5.38's.
Do the math and make a decision based on how you will use the vehicle and where it will spend most of it's speed & Rpm.

That would be a 2.72 gears the next number the gear set number (374), both the ring and the pinion gears should have the same number. The ring gear will be stamped and the pinion gear will be scratch engraved.
