1978 CJ7.304, t150,D20 w/teralow- twin stick, dana 30/AMC20. 35 sst's on procomp wheels.
I've got the opportunity to pick up some Dana 44 axles out of a 77 cherokee. from the pics the rear looks to be centered like my 20 and the front is offset like my 30, I've not researched much on axles yet but it is next in line on my build. Will these work on my 78 CJ7 ? They will be gone thru of course and upgraded.. Thanks for the help

IIRC-The wheel bolt pattern on those 44's are 6 on 5 1/2 or 8 on 6 1/2.
Our CJ's are 5 on 5 1/2.

you are right and their 66" wide. After looking into this they may not be worth the expense of building them up. the cost for both axles is $300. Looking to upgrade my axles... COMMENTS WELCOME

What is meant by outboarding springs?

I guess i should have researched before staring thread, learning alot online. too bad their not 74 to 76 year model. moving perches no prob, but would want to switch to 5X5.5 lug.

The axles you saw in the pics were not 77 Cherokee axles.
The 77 came with Dana 44 's in both WT and NT.
The first year of the FSJ rear 20 was 1980 except trucks.
The last year of the front 44 passenger side diff was 79
The FSJ rear 20 is a good axle with 1 piece shafts
If you decide to buy the front 70s axle and the rear 80's axle check the gear ratio, if stock chance are they won't match.

Hope this helps.

I'm confused. It looks to me by my research that the 77 cherokee came with a rear 44 centered and a front offset to the passenger side. similar to my factory set up. no argument here , they are prob wide track with a slight chance of being narrow track. i will probably pass on this until i really know what i want.

That Dana 44 rear might appear centered, but it is not.
That is due to the Q-trac most likely.
Offset to passenger side.

The oem Dana 44 rear axle housing in my '86 is not centered either. It requires a different axle on both sides. Not really sure why it was made like that.

Re: Dana 44 Quick info.

Why not a Chrysler 8-1/4" out of a later Jeep XJ? They are better than a AMC20 , ( in my opinion) easy and cheap to find, and you can cheaply get wheel spacers to change them from 5 x 4.5 to 5 x 5.5. There are even good lockers for them too.

I'm not familiar with that axle, I'll look into it.
