OK, Back from the greatest time ever in Ouray, Colorado, and now it's back to our "One piece at a time" build. After wheeling with our Ford Explorer because our CJ5 was not ready, I have switched directions on how to proceed with the CJ5 build. I have decided to go with a 10 1/2" clutch on the 231 Buick instead of the 9 1/4" for better power transfer. I really don't feel like pulling our 67 CJ5 w/225 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 apart to answer this question, but maybe someone out there can help me. Does the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 flywheel use a 10 1/2" clutch with a flat surface, or is it the same as a 231 which uses a 9 1/4" and a step flywheel? Both engines are odd fire, so balance should not be an issue.

The early Dauntless Buick 225 V6 came from the factory with a GM clutch the later 225 came with the Borg/Beck both 10 1/2"

You might be able to check for that step by looking thru at the clutch arm hole or by pulling the starter.

Careful it might not fit inside the bell housing. When I put a Buick 231 V6 in my '80 CJ5 the thing wouldn't take a larger clutch. Sure it would bolt up, but the bell housing wouldn't allow it. I ended up using a standard Buick clutch and it held up nicely.

So what would be considered latter? I found a guy with a few parts Jeeps in that era. After what I saw Busa go through in Ouray, I would really prefer the 10 1/2".

I found a guy with several old CJ's that he is parting out. He told me that he would not have time for a month or two to pull the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 engines to check the flywheels. I kind of figured that I would buy the bell housing while I was at it.

The Dauntless Buick 225 V6 bellhousing is the same as any other early BOP bellbousing as far as clutch size .Centerforce list a 10.4" replacement which is the same as a SBC used in the 60's. That is the size I have in both of my V6 jeeps. The Jeep bellhousing has the left hand starter bulge deleted and the GM part number embossed where the delete is. The Jeep specific bells are hard to find and usually command a few hundred dollars.I have sold the standard BOP aluminum bell in good condition for $100.00. Mike:)
