I recently purchased a 1965 CJ5 with a factory installed Dauntless Buick 225 V6 V6. I can not order parts because the 65 does not list the option with a V6 even though the serial number on the frame begins with A and the title number matches with a build date in august. Enough about that, I will order 66 parts. The body is solid with some dents and rust but no rot but the engine broke 3 of the 6 rods and trashed the block; I have no idea what the PO was doing. I trailered her home and began the dissassembly to find an engine code L is a 65. The previous owner installed an edelbrock carb and performer intake manifold and an HEI distributor. I do not think any of these were for an odd fire. My question is how can I be sure to use these parts on a 67 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 engine I just purchased to replace the blown one?

Thanks in advance for all and any advice on this matter.

Im pretty sure the carb and intake have no bearing on the odd fire.. The HEI "like the honey badger" Doesnt give a sheit either. The only thing that would effect motor would be the cam. As long as you have the firing order on the distributor cap correct every thing else will work fine.

The question is what engine do you really have? The odd-fire /even-fire deal has absolutely nothing to do with firing order. It does have to do with firing spacing.Lots of info online about this. That being said delco/GM made both oddfire and evenfire HEI dist. so you may have the correct dist for your engine.1975-76 231 buicks were odd-fire engines. This is a popular upgrade with 225 cu.in. jeep owners. I looked up some info on the HEI dist and engine. This is from the book V-6 Performance by Pat Ganahl. quote
"HEI distributors were used on both even and odd-fire motors. The odd-fire uses a V-8 cap with two blanked terminals. On the even-fire cap the terminals aren't evenly spaced, but the pattern is symmetrical. Both use wide terminals on the inside of the cap to extend the contact time with the rotor." also: "Another difference between even and odd-fire engines is the front cover .The odd-fire has a cast timing marker, while the even-fire has a bolt-on indicator." I hope that helps you . Mike S.

Learned a little more today.. So the cap for the odd fire will have off set posts?? that is odd.. get it??

After doing some research the odd and even fire v6 are very different but buick made an odd fire 231 v6 between 1975 and 77 so it seems I can order the parts by using a 1976 buick skyhawk distributor and it will fit the 1967 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 225 as many of the parts are interchangeable. The vacuum advance needs to be adjustable if I use the origional intake and rochester carb. I am still trying to find out about the edelbrock setup, it seems the runners to the ports are different somehow.

You will run in to a couple surprises when you try to drop that HEI into the '67 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 engine. It appears that you didn't read the replys you got so I'LL let you find out on your own. Mike S.:D

I think I have done enough research to know the distributor in the engine that is blown in the jeep is an even fire with a cap that looks like a v6 cap which should look like a v8 cap with 2 terminals blanked out. Also I am sure the blown engine is an odd fire with a block casting of 1396736 and a stamped code LH making it a 1965 engine with 9 to 1 compression. Also the engine I purchased to replace the blown one has a block casting of 1381623 and a stamped code NH making it a 1967 with a compression 9 to 1. So I am sure the distributor I have that looks like a v6 cap is for an even fire engine and will not work. I need a 1976 buick skyhawk engine with a 231 v6 which is odd fire and the distributor cap looks like a v8 with 2 terminals blanked out, it also fires 2 cylinders at the same time, one on compression stroke and the sister cylinder on the exhaust stroke. The only surprises I foresee are grinding of the intake manifold and an adjustable vacuum advance. I sure hope I am correct.

It's amazing how often a subject comes along that is happening in my own life. My friend Jim who has a V6 '69 just installed an HEI on his Jeep. He read this thread and others on other forums before ordering the parts he needed. Naturally he needed to grind his intake manifold. It says 3/16th's in some places, but he had to remove more material. Once on there was another problem you never hear about. The vacuum advance would not clear the stock fan. The cure wasn't difficult, he got a fan spacer from autozone that worked great. Care had to be taken because the radiator was fairly close too. So, if your planning on swapping a Buick HEI to your 225 V6 add a fan spacer to the list of things you might need.

Also like all the other folks have found out, this was a great addition to his Jeep. It starts instantly and according to seat of the pants instrumentation runs much stronger.

Just got off the phone with edelbrock tech support and they just verified the intake manifold that was on the engine in the jeep is incorrect. They never made an intake for odd fire v6 only even fire. They say it will bolt up and run but never correctly.

I realize this is an older post, but was wondering what solution you found for your intake manifold? I recently purchased a '66 with the 225 odd fire; had an oil leak on the back side so spent the weekend pulling the top-end off to install new seals. It too has the edelbrock intake manifold - which I was hoping was just an "out of production" issue since I'd not seen that before… looks like that is not the case. Engine fired right up, runs fine (no over heating, no noticeable power issues - though it does have a 4 bbl rochester). Anyhow - it has a crack through the mounting bolt hole by cylinder #1 (closest to the HEI) and so I think should be changed out - not having a lot of luck finding a replacement.

You can't always tell the difference between even and odd fire HEIs by the cap. Both caps use terminals that ran a strip if metal for the rotor to discharge to before and after it lined up with the post. You need to look at the reluctor ring below the rotor. the even fire V6 and I6 HEIs have six trigger points evenly spaced. The odd fire V6 HEI reluctor ring has six trigger points arranged in three groups of two. All big cap HEIs, I4, I6, V6, and V8 use the same size shaft and reluctor ring mounting screw pattern. So you can convert an even fire Buick HEI to odd fire by using the reluctor ring and reluctor wheel out of a pre 1985 (pre 4.3) Chevrolet V6 out of a comaro or el camino or something. I converted a V8 distributor to run a 4.3 V6 by using the reluctor assembly out of a 4.1 I6.

That is the piece everyone used on the 225 engine.:) mike

I ended up going with the origional intake and rochester 2 barrel carb off the donor motor, and converted the even fire hei to odd fire by grinding off the 3 points on the shaft and replacing the rest of the parts with 1975 skyhawk parts from any auto parts store, I replaced the vac avance to an adjustable one. I had to grind off some of the intake material to fit but the fan fit without modifications. I think your best choice since you already have the four barrel is the offy intake.
