Can anyone tell me how far the dipstick tube extends in to the pan on a AMC 304 ? I'm trying to figure out if mine broke off at the block or got shoved down in to the pan. The PO sealed it with JB Weld so I am guessing I'm going to need to drill it out. Any suggestions on the process?

The dip stick tube? That's hard to measure. It goes from the engine block just above the oil pan to about 1.5 inches above the bottom of the valve cover. But if your bows out more than mine than the top would be lower.
The important issue is the depth of the dip stick in the oil pan. With the correct amount of oil I would make sure the dip stick gives the correct reading and that's all that should matter.

POs never cease to amaze me. ;)

JB weld can be torched off w/ propane. No need to drill/grind on it.

I want to know how far it extends below the block in to the pan not above the valve cover. I am trying to figure out whether the existing is broken off above the block or if it has been shoved down too far in to the pan. I hope that makes sense? I guess I'll get a new one and hope that it is self explanatory when I install it.

I have the same issue so I discovered while changing out my Tranny...

I ordered this one from Morris...Oil Dipstick Tube 3190848 if you look at the pic it looks like a good 2.5 inches roughly....

I'll know more when I try to get mine out when the new one arrives.

There have been threads about problems with new aftermarket ones not fitting correctly...

Just FYI.

I don't have the links, but remember it was on the AMC 304 's because I was planning to replace my slightly bent up one that takes effort to get the stick back through after checking oil...

did the $8.00 one not fit?

Thanks.... since I only paid 8 bucks for the other maybe I'll just let it collect dust and get the new one. 8 bucks at this point is peanuts on the floor :(

I know what you mean... once you commit to "doing it the right way" on one aspect of the project, leaves you feeling guilty about ignoring other aspects. I have a pile of the "land of the misfit toys" in the corner of my garage too.

Wait......sealed up the hole with JB Weld??? What on earth :wtf:

Reminds me of that thread "Previous Owners did what?" of something like that...

I'm guessing it broke so the PO just filled the tube with JB Weld. It wouldn't surprise me if it broke as he was pulling the engine and just figured that would be a quick fix for the time being. He was selling the engine, so I'm sure he figured the next guy can deal with it. The question is "How do you pull the old one out?" I have about 2.5" sticking in to the pan. Do I just grab and pull down or hammer it up and out?

normally you just twist and pull it out. You're may be a little more "difficult"

I would try attaching a vice grips to the protruding end and twist it out (down). The JB weld complicates things.....in a "normal" situation, you could use a like-diameter rod and tap it out. If it doesn't move, try hitting it with a propane torch to loosen up the JB weld.
