i was thinking of cutting it. maybe a 1/8" off each side.

That should not be a problem, Make sure you get it the first time so you don't have to reassemble twice.
I'm a little puzzled why you have to to this in the first place but can't see enough of whats going on from my monitor.;)

When you raise the front end to do this while the wheels are off the ground grab each wheel and see if you can get any movement out of them, I would want to be sure your wheel bearings are sound as well as the upper and lower ball studs in the knuckles.
If you have any slop or movement there that would want to be addressed first.

i put new bearings in. the ball joints are the oem ones. they seem tight. thought they would be ok since the jeep sat so many years.
