I’ve heard many Jeep owners either ask or complain about connecting a mechanical water temp gauge... the typical sensor probe won’t fit.
The simple solution is a brass fitting and pipe nipple available at Ace Hardware.
The first is a Bell Reducer, 1/2” FIP / 3/8” FIP. Lasco Brand #17-9281 34FD. The second part is a 3/8” short brass nipple. Lasco Brand #17-9403 36DL. And of course some teflon thread sealing tape.
On a AMC 304 /360 V8 locate the vacuum tee behind the thermostat housing. Remove it, screw in the nipple. Then attach the bell reducer to the nipple. Your aftermarket mechanical gauge will now screw right in.
On the straight 6, such as the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , the vacuum tee is located on the driver’s side of the block halfway between the oil pan and intake / exhaust manifolds. The same proceedure applies.
