Engine First time ever making carburetor adjustments yesterday.
I used to think that the carburetor was where fuel was taken in, and then inside the carburetor, magical and mysterious things happened which made the engine run. I always thought it was best to pay one of those wizards or magicians who specialize in those types of mystical devices do that part for me.
Sadly, one day my trusted wizard died and the next 5 (mechanics) I hired, returned my vehicle with one or more things they had damaged or done wrong. Really, every single time.
Yesterday, I started adjusting my carburetor for the first time ever. It was fascinating to see how much of the operation was controlled by the linkages, springs, and other things attached to the outside. My documentation with the carburetor mostly, and not very helpfully, just said to make sure that all of that was connected properly for my application. I was pretty excited when, after about 2 1/2 hours, I started to feel like I was understanding enough of what controlled what to get the engine to run and idle. The engine will now start, run, and idle. Today I will make my first attempt of the magic which I've heard many of you wizards refer to as Lean Best Idle.
I feel like I'm learning a new language and just now memorizing the alphabet. Soon I'll start understanding words and I can try to read the <-BAD WORD-> and Jane books. Yep, I'm that old.
I thought some of you might get a kick out of hearing about an old guy deciding to learn this stuff at retirement age. A lot of my questions and guidance are coming from others with related posts, so basically thanks to everyone.
