The mystery deepens.
I had ordered valve cover gasket and new valve cover plugs, Oil pan gasket and rear main seal for my 1979 CJ7
I was in the process of trying to find a oil cap, every parts store I went to had the same cap and it did not fit, The parts guy at my last stop found the cap that I have said its from a 81???? mine is I thought was a 79. So I got home and ran the block #32535077 H2.
What I was able to find is that block was 81-85 jeep. Any way I can get that down to the exact year?

Also will anything that I purchased for the 79 fit?

Thanks Guys

309C26 is what I have.

1983 block-Most cast iron engine makers what the block to age-harden for a yr before machining.

Now I have to figure out why the oil cap, valve cover gasket and valve cover plugs that I ordered do not fit, did they make different size and or shape valve covers?

Different valve cover than the '79. Is it plastic??

If I understand the link you gave me my 309C26 would be September 26 1979 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . It looks like they used the #3 for 1971, 1979, 1983

The cover is metal.
plastic cap

83 had a plastic valve cover. The plastic valve cover mounted differently. One side of the head isn't tapped for bolts. Judging by your pic it looks to me like the original motor and head.

Agree with Petescj. Does look OEM. Does appear, a PO changed the cover bolts to Allen type as that was not used.
You may well have the OEM installed engine.
Will say your oil filler cap does look like what's on my '85, wth the plastic cover.
