engine identification help

I have a 1983 CJ8 Scrambler. The motor has been replaced. It has a I6 with the identification number on the passengers side badge that reads 109E12. The first number identifies the year. The 2nd and 3rd identify the month of manufacture. The 4th is the engine code. The 5th and 6th is the day code. So from what I find is 1 can be 1968 or 1977. How can I tell which one? Next is 09-Sept, E-AMC 232 i6 CID with Carb IV, 12-The 12th day of Sept.
