So Ive gone full in on an engine rebuild for my Jeep. Started replacing a few things here and there, and before I knew it, I pretty much stripped the sucker down to the block.

Question: How can I tell if I need to have the cylinders bored out? Visually, they look ok. I have about 166k miles on the motor. One thing to note is that prior to removing pretty much every bolt from the engine (it was running), I was getting a significant amount of white smoke from the pcv vavle hose. Along with the white smoke, it seemed to be blowing some oil through that same hose. I think this is referred to as "blow by".

Anyways, since I have this thing stripped down, what is a "must" to replace since it is all opened up, and what is ok to run with the existing parts? For example, should I replace the valves while its split open, or should the existing ones be ok? Both the cylinder pistons and valves seem to have a significant amount of carbon on them.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. THanks

the best way since you have it apart already run your finger nail up the bore and if it catches a "ledge" at the top. Your bore needs to be over bored. It sounds like you need to rebuild it to me with the blow by you have. it is about the right mileage for a rebuild, usually in a rebuild you replace all gaskets and seals/ pistons/rings/bearings your machinist will tell you if your valves are shot

I agree. Since you have it down that far, I'd go over everything and rebuild.

you are already doing a lot of work and spending some bucks,so go ahead and do it right..have an automotive machine shop check the block..with that many miles the cylinders will probably be a little egged..it might not need but 10 or 20 thousandths but get it done. While you are there let them rework the head.at the least it will probably need new guides and the valves lapped..you shouldn't be looking at big bucks to do all this but it will be worth it in the finished product

Thanks for the advice guys. Sounds like I need to find a good machine shop in my area.

Once shes back together, I'll post some before and after pics.
