I purchased a 1980 CJ5 this summer & have changed all the fluids & tracking a wiring problem. BUT now, my biggest problem is the ability to start her, which I have to do to drive her to my friend's shop to work on her. My problem is, in my feeble mind, an engine start prevention switch somewhere between the clutch pedal/starter/Transmission . I have to push the clutch in several times to (I think) make a connection for the engine to start. When it does start, it does so very strong. Sometimes I don't even have to push the clutch in to start it but then other times I have to kick the clutch pedal just right to get her started. I've taken it to 3 different shops since I could not find a safety switch on the firewall or floor or clutch housing. It didn't have any help on the subject in any manual either. All help is appreciated!

If there is an engine start prevention system in your CJ it would have been an aftermarket issue that a mechanic should have been able to find. Does the starter turn over when to hit the key? if so there could be a weak circut in the ignition system that will have to be traced down.

ditto, mine niether. I would check grounds.

I guess I can quit kicking the clutch trying to get the switch to activate then... My old 70's Renegade I had back in high school didn't have a switch either. I just assumed it was the clutch since it would start as I would push the clutch in.

When I turn the key on, the battery charge indicator lowers the battery level but absolutley nothing happens starter/ignition wise. Other times, when I turn the key it starts right up. I just assumed it was a safety switch but the wiring problems I have been chasing, anything is possible.

I would research a possible bad starter switch. With the key in the on position, the voltmeter should read battery voltage. When it is in the start position, the blue wire at the starter solenoid should read battery voltage.

Thanks very much guys, hopefully I can get to it this weekend!

Well with your guidance, I figured out the clutch had nothing to do with it. When I hold the ignition key in the "start" position I can knock on the steering wheel & the Jeep will start. I guess that means I have a wiring issue in the steering column??? Good times!

at least you found the source. Either it's electrical or the actual switch itself. I believe the key tumbler pushes a rod the activates the ignition switch. Start investigating the column. The clutch probally flexed everything on the firewall and column, causing the issue.
