This is my first post here:). I came across the For Sale ad of a 1967 ex-US Navy CJ5 here in Italy. It is far from where I live. The asking price is almost US$ 10,000. I want to offer my 2001 TJ Wrangler for a flat exchange – and see if I succeed .

The CJ does look almost original. The tail lamps are different and so are the side mirrors. What else does not look original?

Welcome from Indiana (USA)... That is in really good shape. I'm not a military Jeep guru, but there are plenty of guys/gals on here that are. Good luck!

Welcome,
CJ's (civilian Jeep) are not military Jeeps and it looks like a CJ5 to me.
Should have dataplates under the missing grab bar
Should have front shackle reversal
Incorrect dash gauges
Grill is CJ
No blackout lights
US were 24v (52-57) some exports were 6v or 12v (58-71)
Export may be different then US

That's kinda what I figured. With it being Navy, I definitely wasn't sure what to look for exactly. It sure is pretty though.. 🍺

I agree with what Posi said. There are a lot of little things that are adding up quickly to say that it is NOT a genuine military Jeep. Can you take a close up picture of placards on the dash in this picture for me?

You must remember this is the Navy, all Military`s went thru the Army Quartermaster, except special order from the branches. I was in the Marines and drove a Navy Ford Courier no plates they were SO.

Need to get in touch with a IMVCC (International Military Vehicle Collectors Club) they will know every thing about this vehicle.

See picture not all will be the same this is not a M38A1.
Some may have been right hand drive exports. You never know what the Navy did.

Forgot Picture.

I notice the blue Jeep has a slit window and shackle reversal. 1955 was the only year CJ5 's can from the factory with SR. Maybe M38A1 frame and CJ body.

I have posted another pix of the USN CJ5 and a pix I found of an early CJ5 in olive green with a signboard in front of in German indicating it as a CJ5 –belonging perhaps to the German military. Both have many things similar: The straps that are used to tie the canvas top to the top of the windshield on this German CJ5 are similar to the ones that are used on the USN CJ5 in Italy. Also similar are the little piece of rubber on top of the left side fender and the clip above the fuel tank filler. The small key-hole cover like piece on the left side of the right headlamp ring are similar on both CJ-5s. The USN CJ has a hole on the left hand side –apparently where one of the bolts holding the radio antenna mast existed– like the one seen on the German military CJ. Side view mirrors and front park lights however, are different –obviously after-market fittings on the USN CJ5 . Google search says US Navy used some CJ-5s in different roles though normally M38A1s were widely used by all the services.

I understand the letters NCB were used by Naval Construction Battalion vehicles. In Italy, besides Naples, NCB operated on the island of Sardinia -AFAIK.
I have posted the rear of the CJ and enlarged pix of the dash. Hope you can see the data plates a little better!

When I was in the OR club they had members that had CJ2a `s, CJ3a `s, CJ3b `s, CJ5 `s & CJ6 `s that were Navy. Some were CJ5 `s with leftover M38A1 parts just like they did with the CJ2 & CJ2a with MB parts. All they did was paint them and marked them, none were front line vehicles.
They weird ones were the ones in Japan.

Anith, try looking over at g503.com. Military Jeeps are their thing ;)
