1983 cj7 , six cylinders , 5 speed , 2.5 inch skyjacker suspension lift , 2 inch body , 35 x 12.50 x 15's ,one piece axles , just bought this cj after PO stored for the past 25 yrs ,
I am going to replace my cj's exhaust. Is it better to run the tailpipe out the side in front of the rear tire , or out the corner in the rear behind the tire ? I know fumes are a issue. Any recomendations please.

Some states (Maine being one) require the exhaust to be exhauted past the passenger area of the vechicle. For safety sake alone I would want it there too just to be sure the chances of CO getting into the passenger compartment are lessened.

I like it out the rear.

When stuck in snow, it's hard to see when shoveling from the exhaust cloud.

Also something for mud to buildup on when out the wheelwell.

Just my opinion. :D

For the type of driving that I do which is in the rocks, it has to go all the way to the rear to protect the pipe from getting smashed. I don't like breathing that stuff anyway.

The factory exits it behind the rear tire at the corner for a reason. It has to do with air flow and prevention of fumes entering the occupant area during driving and stationary running.

It's also the best place to put it to avoid smashing it on rocks. :D

Exactly, the corner exhaust keeps the flat section (tailgate) from sucking the exhaust back into the cab...

Thanks for the information.
