I just acquired an '83 CJ5 . All things considered, it's in remarkable (nearly all original) condition. Unfortunately, I have to wait until the end of July, when it will be delivered by the transport company. I've been doing a lot of research on the CJ's, and while I'm no idiot when it comes to basic knowledge of cars, engines, etc.--I may be over my head with this CJ. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic/shop in the Kansas City area? The last thing I want to do is leave it in the hands of a 'run-of-the-mill' chain store. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

No disrespect intended and I do encourage everyone to support local businesses, but an alternative - or additional option - might be reaching out to Jeepers in the area for mentoring.

It's a great way to meet helpful, friendly folk who can help you negotiate the learning curves, teach you tricks that will keep you from getting too beat up and keep you from crippling your CJ5 .

If I want to meet new people that seem like folk I'd like to call friends, I usually say something like, "who likes beer?"

Thanks Jon. I guess I'm one of those guys who hates to ask for help. Simply asking for a referral in my original post was difficult enough. I'll go ahead and throw this out there, while I have peoples' attention.

I travel back-n-forth from Missouri to Colorado quite a bit. This means going from 1,000 to 10,000 -- back to 1,000 elevation several times a year. This has got me thinking that I need to convert the 2BBL carb to a TBI. There used to be a 'old-timer' close to me who was known for his 'carb work.' Poor ol' guy died about 5 years ago. I know he could've done the conversion in a lick. I'm just hoping to find someone like him who is currently working in my area. p.s. a beer sounds pretty good about now.

Saw/commented on your other post. I think you may need to do the conversion. Both CO and MO have emissions you may have to pass but I don't remember what the cut-off was for older vehicles.

That's a long distance if you're not having it towed and you should comment/check-out the 'longest distance in CJ' thread.
