Took the 8 down for its every other year emissions test on Sat, and thought beforehand that it would be no problem as it has every time before. Wrong. It seems there is a new test the state has added since the last time I had it done. They pressurize the tank to test the vent/evap and it has to hold a certain amount of pressure for 2 min, if I heard the a-hole right that tested it. It passed the actual emissions part no problem. Since I intend to make the repairs myself I ask if he could explain why it failed . At first he tried to tell me to take to someone (of his suggesting) and they would know exactly what to do. After politely telling him that I would be making the repairs myself he no longer wanted to say anymore to me, just kept trying to give me the other guys business card. I decided that I'd had enough of Habib, so I came home and put the old girl up on the ramps to look around. The first place I look is where the roll over and liquid check valves are. Bingo, the faint oder of fuel. I took the plate that holds both valves down to find that at some point someone replaced the vent hoses to the liquid check valve, but obviously didnt know they could drop them down to get at them easily. When they couldnt get the hose off they sliced it with a knife, also cutting the side of the plastic nipple on the valve, making it leak air/fumes. Went and got some plastic epoxy and shes as good as new again, good thing since napa said the part is unavailable so I would've had to modify something else to make it work if I wasnt able to repair mine. Anyways, now back to Habib for a retest.

Please remember that being an azz hole is an equal opportunity title which can be awarded regardless of race, creed, color or national origin.
Good job on the repair, that would have been a tricky one for the olfactory challenged to diagnose.

hey I resemble that remark,, oh ah..... I guess everyone does.
Well give Sabeeb a cigar for me will you Hole. Must be the same guy who cut a vacuum line on my Chrysler so I would have to take it to a mechanic, I popped the hood after he backed it out, looked inside and connected the the line, it fit with the piece he cut puled off. He refused to test again until I brought it to his cousinbrotherneighborwifesfriend Raullmull. So I got on the phone in front of hom and called the BBB to issue a complaint. Seems he had time suddenly to pass my smog.

There was a place I used to go for inspections where the "mechanic" would find that the CJ needed to have the lights adjusted every year. It was kind of like a game we played, he would "adjust" the lights, charge me an additional $5 and I would pass inspection with no close attention to some environmental issues.:D

I know alittle something about being a "Hole";) Typically I try not to show my hole side until someone has pissed me off, but ocassionally I slip up

A guy in san diego (habeeb) used to try and fail my YJ for bull :dung: and even went as far as to cut a line. I called the police and had his <-BAD WORD-> arrested. Freaking idiot woulda killed me had I not noticed the freshly cut line.
I heard he was sent packing.....

When I hear stuff like this, it makes me sooooooooo happy I live in Vermont, where we have less inspection BS. We only do any kind of emitions checks on '96 and up stuff, and thats just a quick plug and play of the OBD2. I've been doing state inspections for 20 years, cant say I've ever failed any body for head light adjustment:). Window tinting YES, thats a big no-no up here!

Up here, we still have the whole small town thing going on, so chances are the guy doing the inspection is you next door nabor, a guy you went to school with, or a relitive at the very least. So we dont see too many complaints.

XJ- We do have our fair share of BS regulations, but its hard to beat the weather:)
Just got back from the retest, it passed. Now I can only be pissed off that I had to pay to get it retested, but I should feel better that habib knocked off ten bucks. Not really

Sabeeb offers pass or do not pay for retest

Next time I'll search out Sabeeb

i feel so sorry for yall, i can pour straight oil in my exhaust manifold drive it, let it smoke like a freight train, go directly to the tag office, get my tags and drive off leaving a trail of dead mosquitoes in my wake and never have a word said to me. to sum it up there is no emission testing bull :dung: here

Cheap, you just got your name put onthe hit list of every member here from CA.
watch your back.

nah, just kidding, it must be nice though, outhere the vehicle has to be a 1974 or older to be smog free

Hi Cheep sorry for being a Stoopid Limey but can you take your jeep into a state / county that does have smog tests, if yours doesn't?

If so why doesn't every one register their Vehicles at your address :D

and how much does a smog test cost and what gets tested? is it just emmisions and fuel tank?
We have a realy strict emmisions test here for new cars (think it's 2001 upwards) all old stuff can't realy fail unless they are blowing Black smoke.

IMHO what he's trying to illustrate to stupidity of having the rules the way they are.
I live 75 miles form Houston Texas in a different county same state.
They have a visual inspection of emission controls as well as a sniffer.
Were I live they don't open the hood or Bonnet or a sniffer.
Also they pay twice the fee.

Mort, here in Ca. they test all cars from mid 70's and up every other year(except diesels, for now). They test the emmisions, fuel tank- evap system, visual inspection to make sure all is original and un-tampered with under the hood. My 8 has the Mopar MPI on it, so it had to be taken to a state referee station for approval, then they affix a special sticker with a bar code that the testing station scans before starting the test. Average cost is 50 bucks.

Mort, here in Vermont it's just a simple "plug and play" check of the OBD system on 1996 and newer cars and trucks 3/4 ton and under for both gas and diesle powered cars....at least as near as I can figure on the diesle part anyway, the way the paper work is writen I cant make heads or tails out of it, so I just plug in every thing 96 and up just to be on the same side. Other then that we do a quick visual check of the gas cap and cat. converter, if both are there, they pass.

To be quite honest in 22 years of doing state inspections I've only failed 1 car, and that was a brand new mustang that had ALL 4! converters cut off. That kid got slapped with a $10,000 fine for doing it, scince he pulled into the shop just as I was getting my annual inspection station audit from the state (which is a totaly painless 5 minute visit by the DOT inspection officer....and she's realy cute!)

As far as what we charge, in Vermont it's based on the labor rate of the shop doing the inspection, so, scince my labor rate is $50. an hour and it takes about a half hour to do it its usealy around $25. for an inspection. But in vermont the inspection has more to do with mechanical condition then emitions so most of that time is spent on things like checking ball joints, lights, horn and wipers.

Yeah, the 25 years & older like mine it's pretty much just Headlights, turn signals, horn, taillights, brake lights, brakes, insurance, $15.00 USD & your outa there.:D

Arizona only has 2 counties with emissions. They encompass the cities of Phoenix and Tucson.
They started doing it in 84 I believe starting with 1967 autos and up.Every year they would increase a year.Example 84 tested 67 and up,85 tested 68 .
Now its 2010 and they should be testing 1993 and up.Well their still testing 1967 and up.Money scam who knows but you can take a smoke blowing 67 in and has long as it passes for what their looking for in that year it passes. It got stricter in the 90's but still only 2 counties do it.
So we register and a friends address out of county and don't worry about.
