We are going to make our annual trip to Twin Lakes up North and decided I was going to bring my jeep this time. I picked up a towbar and installed it already. I spliced into the wiring to get the trailering lights to the back of the jeep. What should I do with the Transmission , Transfer Case and hubs? I know it has been asked many times on this site but I can't find a consistent answer on what to do:confused:. My jeep has a T-90 Transmission with Overdrive , Dana 18 Transfer Case , and locking front hubs. Any and all advice would be greatly apreciated.

Put the hubs in free spin, remove the front and rear drive shafts, double check fluid levels in front and rear axles, you'll be good to go.

My CJ3b has been flat towed everywere an then some by myself and previous owners and all we did was put the hubs in free, Transmission and Transfer Case in neutral and go. It was a beater and we did'nt think twice about it, that said pulling the rear driveshaft would be well advised although I recently went through the entire Jeep and the T case was in really good condition and that would be the reason for pulling the rear driveshaft. We did have trouble with the wheels following the tow vehicle out of turns mainly due to excessive wear on all the steering components which did eat up the tires pretty quickly.
You did not say or I missed how far you plan to tow it?

It is about 800 miles total.

Well to go with what I said earlier, If your steering is good then no worries there and as Ellwood said check your fluid levels(should anyway) and my feeling is you are good to go.
I flat tow my CJ5 to and from my destination with zero problems, I have rebuilt the steering to new and have rear axle lock out hubs so It's more of a trailer as far as the drivetrain goes.
I missed the Twin lakes part in your first post and that will be fun, do go out to Bodie if you have not been there before, if you have then you will recognize my avitar pic:D.

Ya ill have to try it I just redid my frontend so it shouldnt be a problem. Thats funny I have been going there for years and have never heard of bodie before. We will have to go to bodie while we are up there.

Most TCases such as Dana 20 and Dana 300 have the rear driveshaft up high out of the oil. For those you should lock your front hubs. The front driveshaft and its gears will fling oil throughout the TCase when you are getting towed.

But in your case you have a Dana 18 and the rear drive shaft is low and in the oil. That that will fling oil throughout the TCase. No need to lock your front hubs when you are getting towed.
