Fly Wheel for a 304

I have a 79 CJ_7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l motor and T-150 trany. I picked up a 79 AMC 304 the other day and it doesn't have a fly wheel. Will the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l flywheel work or do I need to find one for the AMC 304 ???? There is a swap meet next weekend and any leads to one will be helpful, thanks.

Sorry but the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and the AMC 304 flywheels are not interchangeable

AMC V8 engines are externally balanced and are engine specific. All AMC V8's have their own flywheel. I.E. a 360 flywheel won't work on a AMC 304 , the same with a 401. Very technically each flywheel should be balance to each individual engine. I can see it now, Why did he say that and where is the technical article? When I needed a flywheel for my 360 two different shops, Don's Hot Rod and another I can't remember the name of said essentially the same thing, "To do it right you need to buy a blank and have a machine shop balance it to your engine." The very thought of how much that would cost scared me to death. I got mine from Rob at Willys Works, it works and I'm happy with it.

Thats a machinist for you. If you have a stock engine you will be fine with a stock flywheel

One of these days I will get to build my 360 the way I want to and it will be balanced with the flywheel and clutch just dont hold your breath waiting on me tho

I believe I have a AMC 304 flywheel, I'll check when I get home.
