Oil pump housing to timing cover gasket. The gasket is a bulltear .007. How much pressure should I be applying? I'm on my third try. Should I just spray it with head gasket?

I don't know what "bulltear .007 " means. Can you explain?

Before you do this again it is important to do a TEST fit. By this I mean, try to install the parts without the gasket and see if you can make the 2 metal gasket mating surfaces touch completely by just using hand pressure. In other words, make sure there is nothing interfering and holding the 2 surfaces apart.

Second, inspect the 2 metal mating surfaces that the gasket will touch. are these surfaces flat and free of nicks or blemishes?

If you pass these visual tests. Then the next thing to do is find the proper torque for the bolts you are using. Try using this chart and torquing them to the proper specifications.

SAE Bolt Torque Specs

When installing the gasket you can use some type of gasket sealer, but before you do, make sure both surfaces are completely clean and dry. Use paint thinner or something to get them clean and dry them.

Bulltear makes a lot of nice amc parts. .007 is the thickness. I will check the fitment without a gasket tonight.

Oh, OK. Makes sense.

Just remember one thing about my posts. I am only giving you "general standard maintenance practices" for info. I've never worked on the engine you are working on and don't even know what it looks like. So if some of my answers don't make sense remember that. :)

The bulltear was too thin I think, I talked to the guy there. Replaced with stock and no leak..... Soooo now onto Transmission . With clutch depressed, in gear while in motion. I can feel the gears and hear them. This is new. I'm going to check fluid level now. I'm assuming I just open a fill plug on the side and a drain plug on bottom? I read 2qts but will probably need more. What fluid do I use?

I read about T-5 's. the newer ones can take ATF. The older ones take gear oil. I read about the T-5 ATF in a mustang forum. I bought 80w gear

Edit:
"I read about T-5 's. the newer ones can take ATF. The older ones take gear oil."

Understand this. There is no difference between the new and old gearbox. All the boxes are the same. They just decided to use a different oil in later years.

So with that in mind:

In my opinion either gear oil is fine. The Transmission will be a little quieter with the 80W, but the ATF will give a tiny bit better gas mileage and shift better in the cold because it is much thinner.

Remove the bottom plug and drain the Transmission . Then refill through the side plug. If you have trouble getting the plastic bottle of oil in the fill hole you can use a short lenght of plastic or rubber tubing to help.

Caution: I don't know if your Transmission is like this or not, but some have a bolt on the side that looks like a fill plug but it is not. If you remove this bolt you will ruin the Transmission as some pieces get disconnected inside.

Google your Transmission and make sure you remove the correct plug for filling.

From the info that I have picked up, AMC came out with an addendum to the fsm sometime in the mid eighties and it stated that the T-5 does use gear oil instead of atf. Looking at my M.R. 252 which is the fsm for the '85-'86 CJ, it does state to use AMC p/n 8393 oil for all the manual transmissions including the Transfer Case . In the '86 CJ7 owners manual it states for the T-5 if that part # is not available to use 85w-90 gear oil.

I wish I could review my 80 w but my gearbox is toast so I have no idea
