I just purchased an '83 CJ7 (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 4 spd) that had been sitting for a few years. I am a noobie to Jeeps but I have been wrenching on various other vehicles for some time. The PO made some "adjustments" to the fuel & emission systems and I am trying to sort out what he did and how to correct it since the Jeep runs but will not idle and just generally runs rough. I have attached a file (I hope) that shows highlighted in orange what has been removed. The two hoses that connect the air cleaner to the selonoids on the fire wall that were removed have had both ends (selonoids & air cleaner) plugged. The PVC "Air In" on the valve cover is just open to the air and not connected to the air cleaner. There is a vacuum line that comes from around the carb up and under to the the driver fender side that was not connected to anything (plugged it for now). There is a sensor (O2 ?)screwed into the exhaust manifold just above where the exhaust attaches that is not plugged into anything. The hose from the cannister to the "Can Purge" is also disconnected and plugged with a bolt. The is a vent connection on top of the carb bowl that is not connected to anything. I guess my questions are, from this info can you tell me what they were trying to accomplish or this just some sort of not thought out hack job? Also any thoughts on how best to correct this? I have read some posts talking about "nuttering", is that a viable option? It seems like it would be difficult to go back to the stock setup. If it helps I am in TX and the Jeep is not subject to emission testing. Thanks for any feedback...

:chug: Texas that makes it easy, the minimum to run your engine would be your PVC to your air cleaner, vacuum hose to the power brake booster, and finally your vacuum hose to your distributor. That is the minimum it takes to run, everything else is emissions based. Your PO was probably trying to get your jeep to run decent by un plugging stuff. The Nutter bypass works, however I swapped to HEI much simpler set up.

Yeah I have pretty much decided I am going to gut all the emission stuff. Now I am trying to decide whether I am going to do it or take it to the local Jeep shop and have them do it.

Just Empty Every Pocket... You could have a vacuum leak (what the PO was chasing down) or a dirty, mis adjusted carb also look at your fuel is it old and fuel filters for rust from the tank:chug: Up to you on taking it in. I prefer to do everything myself

Lots of posts on how to do the Nutter bypass. It would make things simple in your case instead of trying to track down stuff. It is pretty straight forward to do. I don't know that a shop would remove the emissions off a vehicle...but than again, you are in Texas. :D

I say do the nutter bypass it's pretty easy just read up on how to do it first. And I agree with what everybody else said but your PVC should be hooked up to a vac from the base of you carb in back not your aircleaner. And why you are at I would recommend doing theTeam Rush upgrade.

I have read some of the posts on doing the nutter bypass and I am comfortable in doing that piece. Where it gets a little gray is the part about what parts of the emission stuff, EGR, air hoses, cannister, vacuum lines, control valves, etc I can remove or cap off. While I was at the shop they showed me a Jeep they had done and it was litterally gutted. All the control valves on the firewall were gone, the cannister was gone and associated hoses and there were almost no vacuum lines except for the one going to the dizzy. Also, all the related wiring harnesses were gone. It looked very clean and tidy. I just want to make I know how to remove all the no longer function stuff without making matters worse.
