Fuel Pump?

My Dad just got an 84 CJ7 , he's been doing a lot of work to it since it's been sitting for quite a while. The problem he's having is, it'll start up and run ok, but the longer it runs, it doesn't want to idle and then is sputters out and dies. He noticed that the previous owner installed an electric fuel pump. Looking at diagrams, he sees that the original fuel pump had 3 lines, on from the fuel tank to the pump, one from the pump to the engine, and one from the pump returning to the fuel tank. The "new" electric pump only has 2 lines, it doesn't have the return to the fuel tank. Could this be causing his issue?

Thanks,
Nate.

Yup, with a carbed engine a mechanical pump is just fine, cheaper and simpler too. Install a new 3 hole, oem style fuel filter also. Setting up an electrical fuel pump has a different style. You are looking for about 4-5 p.s.i. from a new mechanical pump.

:agree:
Also make sure that you install the filter with the return line directly above the supply line.

Yeah, he says he put a 3 hole filter on, but right now the return and supply lines are mounted next to each other, not one on top.

The supply line is a 5/16" hose and the return is a 1/4" line. What the previous owner did is a topic of a post somewhere in this forum.

The return line should always be at the 12 o'clock position.;)

The original pump had 2 lines not three the return line runs off the filter back to the tank. You say it has been sitting for quite awhile did he drain all the old gas out and not run any of it thru the motor?
