I know that the 91-95 wrangler 15 and 20 gallon tanks were the same but the earlier ones might not be

supposedly the only difference between the 15 and 20 gallon poly tanks isnt the actual tank, it is is the fill hose that has been altered to only "allow" 15 gallons to be put in... The dimensions are supposedly the same... I'm just going by what I've been told..

Yes, the gauge is an issue, but I've had auto meter gauges for 10 years. I am contacting them Monday to get one (or figure out a fix) for the ohm differences. But I'm sure that can be overcome.

Fuel pressure/gph was a concern but after looking at the specs of stock fuel pumps for 1988 Wranglers, they are very close to the Holley pump that feeds the Holley EFI kit I have. So that is resolved as well.

I hate NOT having one of those sending units in my hands to actually see one in person... the guys at 4wd .com or Morris couldnt tell me anything about the specs. I seem to know more than they do..and thats kinda scary.

Its a sad world when people go strictly by application and dont open their minds to the possibilities of making things "work"...

I really need to find a used sending unit and check if it is going to fit properly. Then I can safely move ahead.

If anyone out there has a tank laying around with a round-flanged sender and pump attached, I'd be indebted if you could take measurements of it... The diameter of the locking ring, length from top to bottom, any anything else that might be pertinent.

I understand your frustration with people being close minded on parts that aren't used in stock application. I hope you don't feel that I am joining that group of people. have done plenty of conversion with parts that were never meant with jeeps.

That being said it really seems like you are making a lot of extra work for yourself to have the luxury of an in tank pump. an inline pump in the frame rail is what most people use in both cj and fsj tbi conversions and is what is recommended. in fact must bolt on after market fuel injection set ups from Holley, hesco, and edelbrock all include inline pumps for the application.

if you are really concerned with it failing on you, you could buy two or even three spares for the same or less cost as a wrangler tank, fuel pump, fuel sender, and whatever else you need to make it work.

getting back on track with your thread. yes someone mentioned earlier that the difference between the yj 15 and 20 gallon tank was internal. but if I am following your thread right you are planning on keeping the cj 20 gal which should have different dimensions. That's why I said you may not be able to draw to the bottom of the tank.

I am looking for 2 measurements.
1. across the round flange on the sender
2. the overall length from the bottom of the flange to the bottom of the lowest point, probably the pickup tube.

Jeepboy, I had a conversation with a jeep buddy from back home in Mobile and I mentioned using Yj tanks in cjs for TBI conversions. He said that he has seen it work before using the yj tank with the tbi internal pump from the late 80s 4cyl wrangler with TBI and grafting a CJ7 sending unit with the sending unit from the yj. I am waiting on him to send me more info on it since he didn have pics or measurements.

that is basically what I am doing.
I havent decided if I want to either:

A: use my 1985 20 gallon poly tank, and take the pump/sender from a YJ and braze it onto the sender from my CJ tank

OR

B: use the 1988 YJ tank I have, (which has no sender/pump) and get a sender/pump from a 4cyl TBI tank

Edit- my micrometer seems to have gone on vacation so this is not exact, but it's close.
The flange is 2 3/4" across.

Aeromotive has a pretty neat setup for adding an in-tank pump to a vehicle that wasn't fuel injected from the factory. Aeromotive|18689 - Phantom 200 Stealth Fuel System
It's a little pricey but you can use the stock tank and not have to try and make something else work. I particularly like the foam baffle since it isn't easy to put a baffle in the factory CJ poly tank.
