I bought a 66 CJ5 , pushed into the shop and started pulling seats and cleaning the junk out of it. Got to the glove box and found some old insurance cards for a 76 CJ5 well i thought must be for another jeep, bought curious and went and looked at the vin (for the first time) well what do you know I got a 76 CJ5 .

I dont know if 76 is any better or worse than a 66 for what we want to do (daily driver with some 4 wheeling for the son someday) but do feel pretty stuipd for never double checking a little thing like that.

Well in crawling around under the jeep it sure is rusty. was expecting that but was hoping for it to be in better shap. the rust has been repaired once before so going to take a good look to see what direction we want to go. would love to put a new tub on it but too expensive at the moment.

Well just thought i would share my really good observation skills

You never know with a Jeep. On the bright side, yes, It's better to have a 76 model year CJ. They changed a fair amount starting with that year, and untill 1986, which was the last year the CJ was built, a great many of the parts are a simple swap, which means that availability of parts to you now covers a 10 year span. Good luck with your project!

Don't you just love life's little surprised??
because you are only dealing with the frame , axles and body. it's no big deal.
have you learned what axles and brake system you are dealing with??
As long as you have enough body left to at least resemble a CJ your in business. The body is the least of your worries. I would not say anything has changed with your project to amount to anything.
You still have the same $700 hole to shovel money into! what more could a man ask for!!

I thought I saw somewhere a parts interchange list but can't find now just wondering if body parts from 70 (tub fenders) would fit on the 76
Thanks paul

they won't

here is how it lays out
54 through 71 bdy parts can all interchange, you may need to do a bit of moding like whindseild wipers or gas tank but they never changed much else. In 1972 they changed the front clip to the long nose version, that was so they could get a AMC strait 6 in there. They also made some major change in drive line such as dropping the D18 for the Dana 20 so rear axles will not swap from the 71 and earlier to teh 72 and later.
Next major change was 1976 where they basicly redid everything. Now it seems that the entire body changed as did a bunch of other stuff.
Best thing to do is to stick with 76 and later CJ5 stuff and some YJ junk.
