Gas tank valve and breather question

Hi All,

On a CJs ... is there any way to prevent gas escaping (flowing) out from the tank when the car flip a side .. i.e.: by using a secure gas tank cap. I am using STANT gas cap now but I don't think its secure enough.

How about if using a screw type of gas cap ... any recommendation from which type of jeep to use .. i.e.: YJ, XJ or TJ ...

For the tank breather ... is there any breather with valve which can prevent fluid coming out but still allowing air to be sucked in.

There must be something wrong with the filler seal, mine has been tested also, with no problems. The later model CJs (80+) have a good vent system from the factory. Get a CJ repair manual and check it out.

I remember don't have such valve in my CJ tank ... I have take the tank for servicing few times .... Don't see any ...

Hi All,

I finally can have access to the CJ7 parts catalog and see what the factory tank breather looks like … which I don't have it in my CJ .. maybe the PO throw it away when doing the restore/paint. I attached page from the catalog for review.


It was the one with the red circle .. part no. 4.142-15 and its not available locally.

Any suggestion on where I can purchase it ? or can I just use any roll over valve in combination with other valve that can prevent water/liquid entering the tank ?. Any reference for such aftermarket valves would be a great help for me.

Appreciate for any advise/solution for this.

There are probably many kinds of rollover and check valves. All you really need is one that works. As far as keeping water out of the tank,tranny, and gearboxes, you could increase the length of the vent tubes or stay out of deep water. There are many other locations where water entry can be a problem in a CJ. That leaky gas cap issue you had earlier could be solved by a good cap, and or filler tube. There might be cracks in the hoses also. Sounds like you live in a place where a Jeep is a good thing to have and could use a bit of maintaince.

I think I found one ... I am asking the seller if its really the one I am looking for:

The leaky gas cap is a STANT brand, I have replace it back with the one I purchase locally which is more sealed and there for kills the fuel pump without any tanks air opening/venting ... I used to have an axle plastic breather for tank vent but I think its not safe.

I understand that many place in CJ for water to go in, however ... I try to do it best ... if it can be fix with no expensive solution ... at least one problem fix.

That style shown fits into the top of the gas tank and there are two of them. It is not the type of gas tank that I have and would suggest that you check the top of your gas tank for those locations. The fuel tank vapor emission system is quite complicated and I suggest you check your repair manual to see how it is set up.
