Gear ratio

Gear ratio
W/33's, and the 1:1 of your 4th gear, you could run 4:10 R&P without much issue. ;)

I say the following, as someone who has setup R&P's for decades.

Watch someone doing this, before you decide or try it on your own. :notworthy:

R&P work, is one of the most precession and detailed jobs you can undertake in automotive work.

Among the tools you need, is a in/lb torque wrench, and a dial indicator that reads to .001". Along with a magnetic base for this indicator. You will also want a ft/lb t'wrench for the ring gear bolts, bearing cap bolts and pinion nut.

Hint: Stay away from 'crush-sleeves'. Make a solid spacer and use shims.

Where could I get the shims and solid spacers if I decided to do that job?

Wish I knew about the AMC 232 i6 .
My AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l will run all day at 2600-2800 rpm and no issues. The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is RL'd at 4500rpm.
Shims come with most install kits. GOOGLE how to read a gear pattern while you're at it. You want the best pattern on the 'drive' side of the ring gear.

What's your hi-way speed at 3K rpm?
Are you sure it really is 3K? Have you confirmed your tach is correct? My OEM tach reads 200-225 rpm high, at 3K rpm indicated.

I use a multimeter Lumpy, and have tried various ones with the same results. The freeway tire pressure is around 28 lbs and the actual diameter is not a 33" so that changes the math from those calculated charts. I once got a deal on a brand new T-18 with a CJ adapter kit for a ridiculous price that I could not resist from Hicks in Pomona. This was way before those 4 to 1 kits came out. My 4:10s were pretty hard on the T5s that I had at the time.

I sure do hate how the tire manufacturers do not live up to their height claims, tires are cast into molds you would think you could get them more consistent

Your OK, CJ AMC 20s do not use crush sleeves.

But, building an axle is not for a new person (as stated).

See -->> Jeep CJ7 & CJ8 Scrambler Axle Parts |AMC Model 20 Rear Axle

I can't speak about a CJ but I had a '68 Charger running 3.91s and now have a '78 1ton dually that has 4.10s and at 60mph they are running 3300 to 3600 rpm.

Do dana 30s use crush sleeves? I'm also thinking about adding some sort of locker, what's involved with installing something of that sort?

Hunting , Mountains , Lockers & Gear Ratios?

I think you should reevaluate what direction you're going in..........Hunting , mountains, off road or pleasure on the freeway........because it's pretty hard to have it all...............I've hunted all over the Cally Coast and Nor-Cal and the Sierras and just about anywhere you're chasing deer or Pigs in California can be very challenging....3:53 to 3:73 gear ratios with a 2:1 Transfer Case and 33" tires will suck off road.....even if you have the 6.68 gear in your NP-435 which will only help in low gear.............Low gears in the axles and Overdrive in 4th or a lower gear in the Transfer Case , to capture both ends of the spectrum.

What gears do you run? My experience has been quite different. We go deer hunting up north and our group has a stock 79 CJ5 and so far it's trucked everywhere we've ever wanted to go.

What tires where you using? I run 33 BFG/AT on 8" wide wheels and I'm 'rite' at 33" at 26psi.
My T-5 and 4:88 R&P are very happy on the hi-way @ 65mph........
The AMC20 's do use crush sleeves. The 30 does not.........
