Have a 84 CJ7 , 360 auto. I have long tube headers on my jeep. The headers run outside my frame into a cherry bomb muffler under the rocker panels back inside to the tail pipe and exhaust out the back. I don't like seeing the cherry bomb from the side and can't install side steps with them in the way. I want to install headers that come down and stay inside the frame and go out the back. Does anyone have any ideas on what headers will work and how much work to get installed.

I had a similar issue with my '79 CJ5 . I switched out the external frame rail heddman headers for internal frame rail heddman headers. The only snag was having to loosen the moter mounts and raising the engine a few inches to clear the clutch linkage on the right side. Otherwise they slipped right in with a little finness. Then streight pipes all the way back with cherry bombs. Makes that old cj look and sound mean.

On my driver side, I have the shifter linkage and the passenger side I have the starter. These areas look tight. Has anyone installed long tube headers on a 84 CJ7 with the 360 engine and got through these areas?

The inframe headers are the same for all AMC v8 regardless of engine size. Any header for 72 and up v8 will work, some may be better constructed. I did not ha a problem with my old Edelbrock alumicoat headers or my new Headman headers. Your results may vary depending on the header mfr and your exhaust shop...

Im betting the reason the previous owner put those outside the frame rail headers on is due to the automatic Transmission .

I went with pacesetters. I had to modify the tab that the positive cable connects to on the starter just a bit so it would not touch the header. That is the only problem that I've had.

When I did my frame swap I moved the exhaust inside the frame. I used Hedman headers that were an after market perfect match. I can try to find the part number if you want. Try Quadrarec. Good luck.

Aren't the standard and automatic shift the same size at the bell housing?

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.
Yes but with a automatic you have linkage on the outside of the Transmission that you don't have with a standard.

Working around the auto linkage can be a hassle, especially if you are running a larger size exhaust.

Got it. Never even ridden in a CJ with an automatic, much less looked under one!

Was just told that the Hedman will not work with the auto Transmission . I guess the shorty headers would be a better choice but can't find any to fit my jeep.

If your gonna try going with a different header your going to have to redo the whole exhaust route anyway. Headers dont mean much on a Cj. Your here in Pa so you should be able to source some stock exhaust manifolds from a junkyard AMC 304 . Then you could take it to a muffler shop and have them route it out the back for you no?

I guess that I will have to go with stock manafolds. Does the pipes go back along the inside frames on both sides? Looks like I have clearance on both sides of the Transfer Case .

From the factory they used a Y-pipe into a single exhaust down one side. A place like Midas for example shouldnt have a problem putting on a dual exhaust set up from the manifolds back for you.

I run shorties and dual exaust on my 350. The tcase seems to do ok, but mine is more a trail jeep than a street jeep. But I think you would be fine.
