Help with a starter motor

Trying to help out a mate with a J20, the starter motor is playing up. It will spin but won't engage. I have pulled the thing apart to see if there was anything jamming it or loose but all seems fine. It will spin happily and at good speed but won't pull the arm down to engage drive. I think its got to be something to do with a lazy magnetic pull? or is there something else. Any help appreciated

It must have something to do with the pull down coil. Usually we just throw in a new starter when that happens but I expect it’s a lot cheaper to do here in the The States than in Ireland.

There is a square bushing between the weight on the arm and the casing of the starter itself that wears out - it causes it to ground against the case. Or you can tear it apart and see if it is dirty - the armature needs to slide freely on the center shaft. Or..... go get a new one - $30 to $40 in the US.
