This is my first posting so I hope I'm in the right spot? I need some help. I live in AZ and I am looking at a 1982 CJ5 Renegade and I need some help on what it is worth.

It has a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l (30,000 miles on a $2,400 rebuild. I saw the receipts for everything. Over $14,000), T-176 , Dana 300 with Terra Low, Detroit Locker rear, Detroit true trac front, Warn performance hubs, Borg Warner "Brute-Force" clutch, Morse one piece axles, 4:10 Reider gears, 33" tires, 2.5" Pro=-Comp lift, 1" body lift, Warn winch, full roll cage, AC, PB, PS, ZERO RUST, CA emission vehicle, 4bbl with Offy manifold, Headman header. It has the original paint with the Renegade badging. Body is very nice. It appears to have been well taken care of. What do you guys think???????????????????

Hi cpanos, welcome to the site :chug:.

I really hesitate giving you a number. Not being in Arizona for one, and not being able to see the CJ is another. Did you happen to take any pictures? That would help a lot. Sorry I'm not much help.

Hey cpanos and welcome to the site! :chug:

I can't tell you what is worth but I would ask the PO what he wanted! It really depends on what they are looking for.

what they said, let them start with asking price and counter with pricing based on comparable Jeeps for sale in that region seeing that what one would go for there will or may not bring that here. biggest thing is to check what other Jeeps are bringing there.

Hope this picture works. The thing is that nothing around here is really like this. I can purchase bone stock early 80's CJs for $2500, but they need everything or I can purchase modified ones for $6-15K. i think I can get this one for around $8K.

Looks nice, and the value is what you would pay for it

Here in Socal a CJ is worth around 3 to 5 grand running in good shape
a bit more if restored to original, a bit less if running a big lift and off road stuff. ( means it is beat up and needs work) Being a Renegade , if it is an original and not just the stickers put on, I could see going for a full 8, but check out the documentation and see if it has all the Renegade package there. To many guys go out and think they have found a SUPER FIND OF THE CENTURY just to find out someone bought the stickers and applied them. What scares me is all the hi pro mods, I mean a collector will want that engine back to original so does he have the original parts?

Them there are some big tires under that CJ! The will rub and tear those fenders apart! :)

Just remember, if he did the work vs. if someone else did it. I have receipts for 25,000 on my Jeeps, but I did all the work... and I like to think I did it the right way and didn't cut corners.

It is a used vehicle. It really depends on what you want, what you are comfortable paying, and what your mechanical knowledge is. If you can fix it, great, if you can't, you have to pay someone and that gets expensive, very very quickly.

CB hit it right up! There in lies the question, it is a used vehicle and you have to evaluate it correctly...

8k aint cheap, but only you will know what it's worth to you. Many times, it's harder to know the worth of a jeep like this than it is one that is in fair to poor condition. Little story... We had a new member sign up here asking what a CJ7 in "like new" condition was worth. He bought it, posted pictures, and sure enough, it was a beautiful CJ7 in fantastic original condition. He messed with it a bit and painted a few odds and ends, jacked the price two thousand over what he paid, and sold it to a buddy of mine. Come to find out, most of what he claimed about the jeep he stated as absolute detailed FACT was no more than a lie. The engine was messed up from sitting for years and will need to be torn down, the brakes were shot, the fuel tank was shot, the heater core was shot, and a whole list of smaller things that needed attention now, not to mention what would show up later after it had been run. So that "like new" jeep was a rip off. Not only that, but when it was brought to the sellers attention, he simply told my buddy to "just sell it off to someone else" Kind of perpetuating the screwing over. That's not what Jeepers do. My dragged out point is, even though the jeep LOOKS good, and has tons or reciepts to prove work done, you can never really know how the work was done, or who did it or even if those parts were really installed in that jeep or a friends. It's kind of a leap of faith even for a seasoned jeep guy. The engine may run really well, but was it REALLY rebuilt or just painted, are the gears really new? are the tranny and Transfer Case gone over? or just in really good original condition?? You cant possibly know. Never take anyones word for it, and go in with eyes wide open. If you really like what you see, and can easily afford the cost, then like anything else, make your best deal and go in knowing fully well that you are buying an antique vehicle regardless of the condition, will need at least some work and maintainence over time.

I would check out all the mods really close to make sure they were done correctly.
What are you going to do with this jeep? 8Gs for a very nice looking jeep is a lot to take on the trails and mess up. If it is a mall crawler than maybe.
As said above, remember it is an old jeep and will need work no matter how good it looks.

Thanks everyone, great advice. I agree with Coldwater. That is why I asked this question to begin with. I have been restoring vehicles for 30 years. Capable of doing everything myself. I am confident that the receipts are real and that all of the heavy work was done by reliable shops in the area. I totally agree that this thing is 28 years old and things like heater core, brakes, seats, top are really incidental fixes to me. I guess I am asking this as the real question: If the heavy lifting items are solid, body, frame, differentials, Transmission , engine, etc... is this thing worth $8K in the JEEP world of things? If this was a Camero or Vette I could answer that question. These thing are just a different animal! Thanks!

CW hit the nail on the head with his answer, I thought my rig was in pretty good shape until I got it home and then that's when all the little surprises bagan popping up. I did not pay a lot for it so no biggie. It's all in what your gut and wallet tells you. Oh and it is a nice looking rig :)

Personall, in my opinion, he's on top dollar for his Jeep. However, given your experience with mechanicals, and having checked it out are confident that it is what you want in a Jeep, and you can afford it. Cut the best deal and go Jeepin!
